WTF? Aero Mirror Install Gone Wrong. Mysterious RHD Door on Passenger Side?

Hey guys,

Okay, weirdest thing I've seen on a car in a while. On my ROW '82 SC, I was swapping on my fancy new Aero mirrors. Driver's side went perfect, passenger side is a huge WTF.

The Aero mirror does not fit in the new location at ALL. Upon doing some reasearch, the old mirror I pulled off is actually a 70's 924 mirror (not sure if it's drivers or passenger side). Upon further research, I noticed that the mirror location of the right had drive (RHD) and left had drive (LHD) mirrors are way different. It looks like I have a RHD "drivers" door on my passenger side, for some crazy reason.







I'm a little upset, as I just paid plenty of money for these really cool mirrors and I'm stoked to put them on. But now is the tough part... How the HECK do I fix it?

Can I swap the mirror base on the aero mirror with a drivers side unit to make it for my door? Door I have to swap my whole fricken door for a LHD passenger door? Or should I try and fill the holes and re-drill holes where they are supposed to be and repaint?

Which one is your car? On the 911, the passenger side mirror is much further back on the door than the right side, If it was mounted symmetrically to the driver side, it would be obscured in a large part by the A pillar.
What mirror did you take off?

The red car is mine. The blue on in the screen shot is how I determined mine is incorrect. You can also see that there is a hole still sticking out of the bottom of my 993 mirror.

You can also see the blue car's driver side is mounted much farther forward, similar to where my passenger side is mounted.

That's true. I did notice the holes seem to be drilled "not exactly factory" quality. I wonder if this was added after.

It seems like fill and redrill would be easiest and cheapest... But how the heck can I determine where to drill? I can use the gasket as a template, but I don't have another 911 available to reference where to actually place it on the door.

I believe there is a template in the factory service manual for drilling out the passenger door. I'll try to look around for it tonight.

Seriously? Thats cool. Maybe I can use a friend's 964 to try and get the placement correct. Thats going to be the toughest part.

Your ROW likely didn't come from the factory with a passenger side mirror, as many of them don't (not required in other countries). It was likely added when federalized when imported. Mine is the same way.

You'll notice on the drivers side that there is a reinforcement plate on the inside of the door where your mirror mounts on the drivers side. It won't be there on the passenger side.

It was in the right spot, but they did a poor job with the hole drilling. I couldn't get the mirror to stay tight because the hole for the catch on the tightening screw was too big. My clever garage solution was to use a blind nut clip at the top of the hole to reduce the hole size and give the catch something to grab ahold of. It worked great, as the mirror is tight and the clip is under the gasket, so can't be seen.

Did you notice that your driver mirror was power adjusted and your passenger mirror was not?

1: As previously stated, fill, sand, paint, install properly

2: Get creative and fabricate a larger base that will cover those hideous holes that were drilled with less than a little love...

Hint: You have nothing to lose with option 2

Look at post# 5 in this thread, as that is exactly what this Pelican did to mount earlier style mirrors.

It would have definetely come with a RH mirror if RHD, which apparently, it did not.
