Porsche 911's: Dead men's cars
I was watching a Seinfeld "comedians in cars getting coffee" episode with Seth Myers. The car in question was a 911rs and Jerry made the observation that it was a dead man's car...it was a car that was kept by owners until they died. Then it was sold by their estate.
So.....is your car a dead man's car? My 87 carrera was not purchased from a dead man 14 years ago. But the next owner will likely purchase it after I'm dead and gone. Even in light of the current run up in prices, I don't think there is anything out there that would offer me more bang for the buck. What say you?

Dueller,
An RS would be if I had one! The other two… we'll see, depends what gets done to them. The C4 is pretty special to my wife, she likes that it runs and we can take it anytime for dates… I see you have Buells. Post some pics.

Mine is not, but there's a good chance that the next owner will not say the same.

Seeing my build project through to the end almost killed me. Does that count?

I suspect I will not sell mine until I am too old to drive it. I can't imagine keeping it just to sit in my garage. If someone came along and offered me nice Cayman S money I would thing long and hard about selling it. That will happen right after congress gets busy and starts doing a good job for the country and not just trying to line their own pockets and get re-elected.
I bought my car from a guy that used it as a daily driver. That was in 1995 so the car was just 11 years old back then.

Mine is not. It had been neglected by the original owner and it took me a few years to convince him to sell it.
I can't imagine wanting to replace it with another sports car or just selling it. Perhaps if I was disabled to the point I couldn't drive it. I expect one of my kids will want it. |

My goal is to continue to learn how about my car to the point I can keep it running pretty much indefinitely. I would love to leave it to my nephew, who really appreciates it.

Mine is a "dead woman's" car. Her daughter is my office manager and she just wanted the car gone when her mother died , so she gave it to me.
It is a 1975 Targa S with low miles. Needed new interior and had pulled head studs. Currently it is running like a top and my office manager uses it for special occasions (when her son got married for example) The car's nickname is Dee in honor of the previous owner.

At least one of mine will be a "college fund car" when my kids get that age. The 911 my wife and i got married in will likely be a "dead man/womans car" if we dont get buried in it...

I 'm the second owner of my 78 SC. The first owners were Warner Bros.
I still don't know who at Warner Bros. other than it was purchased new at Vasek Polak in 78. Maybe that's why I love Bugs Bunny so much!

Butters' next owner will acquire a dead woman's car. They may have to pry my cold dead fingers off the wheel...

Pretty sure it's my kid's car, next. Unless I crash it.

My 73 targa belonged to my best friend. He contracted leukemia at 47 and lasted only about 18 months from that point.
As we used to always "play cars" together, when his wife asked me if I wanted the car, I decided to sell my targa and buy his. In this way we now still play cars together, 16 years on.

I'll keep mine til I die for sure -- the only caveat is if somehow I was not able to buy a second in a few years -- currently that would not be a problem but things change.
I would like a targa and a coupe and if I can only run one then I'll likely trade back and forth every few years. But I'm a softie for the low end of the market cars so I can't imagine having to sell this to get a coupe down the road. (insert crossed finger and wood knocking emoticons here) |

My favorite line is when Seth admits he has no idea what the significance of the RS is and that he was never into cars and Jerry says, "Wow, that's a special kind of out-of-it."

I saw that same remark in the Seinfeld video - made me laugh. I suspect that mine will be handed down to one of my kids or grandkids, and I want to do so while I'm still around so that I can watch them enjoy it.

I'm a big fan of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, but Seth Meyers could not have shown less interest in that fantastic car. It's petty, but I feel the inherent injustice in the universe most acutely when unappreciative "cars-are-appliances" people get intimate access to epic vehicles. I'd rather waste expensive, organic food on my dog.
This may be ambitious of me, being 25 yrs old, but I do plan on keeping my 911 until one of the following occurs: A) I die, 2) I can pass it on to a kid, preferably my kid, D) internal combustion vehicles are banned forever, at which point I will look into an electric conversion or just close the garage door and inhale the exhaust until peacefully slipping away. A distant 4th possibility is if the car keeps appreciating to the point that I can sell it, buy a rougher driver-quality 911 and pocket $10k... which would rapidly find itself "re-invested" into the 911 or some other old German car anyway.

Uh,Oh,
The 1975 911S "Crunchmobile" was owned by a deceased United Flight attendant, bought it from her husband. The 1984 Carerra "El Chupacabra" was bought from a guy who bought it from a dead guys estate, the title was still in the dead guys name. I am not sure what this says.....
