Tranny rebuild

Nope, did not do it myself.
I took it to Jack at Stuttgart SW in Phoenix and want to give him some free advertising as I've always been so well treated and fairly dealt with at his shop.
I lost 2nd gear @ 246k miles on my '83 SC with , obviously, my 915.
It had had issues but motored along ok.
Took it to him and drive in drive out rebuild was about 25/26 hundred all inclusive. Had some other stuff done too so am figuring.
Had many issues.
2nd gear had 3/4 of the teeth gone (ok, so I found some on PPI but it shifted fine) and parts altogether were 1600 bucks (sliders etc...some major elements)...fluids/other small parts and labor counted for the rest.
In this market, and done in 3 days after disassembly and waiting for parts....really nicely done.
Highly recommend if you do not want to do it yourself.

Glad to hear you were treated well…I think shop recommendations are perfectly fair, especially compared to how many people get on forums to complain!

Could you elaborate on this? …i.e. tell us more about leading up to the failure? Did it just stop going into second?

My 915 is tough to get into 2nd most times, so I'm trying to gauge how close I am to "needing" a rebuild.

You might want to change the fluid. Some have reported an improvement in shifting after filling with fresh fluid.
When you pull out the drain plug check for metal bits.

Yep, check the drain plug magnet for dog teeth. Fresh fluid can help, but if the synchro parts have wear, well...

Reiver; good show! So, I take it that your trans had been apart, maybe more than once, the pinion bearing race in the diff was tight, and all of your bearings were in good condition? 246K miles more often than not translates into a $5K - 6K repair, sometimes even more!

On the first question....I couldn't get into second at all, as if there was a gate block. Double clutching would not work obviously.

Pete, I suspect some stuff was done awhile ago but Jon said it'd been quite awhile.
I believe the PO to me, that had the car only a short time and was not a 'Porsche Guy', probably rushed shifts and jammed shifts....maybe did a 3rd to 2nd when looking for 4th.
When I PPI'd the car 2 synchro teeth came out of the drain but it did shift well so I took a chance (30k miles ago)...I'd since found more teeth...actually 3/4 of the dog teeth on 2nd were gone....it finally expanded and just locked in place.
I could get all of the other gears but there was wear there too...123 synch rings slider hubs,etc....

Very exact right now, as if gated...nice.

I know lots of folks would rather have that done than tackle it themselves and Jack has a good rep for an obvious reason.

Between the Howard Freeman redone 930-10 and the rebuilt tranny drives like new.

Thanks. FYI I had a local shop do a service shortly after moving here to Oregon in 2013. I asked for a trans fluid change, but they looked at it and declared it good with no issues. All my other gears are good, I'm just starting to find it tough to get into second at times...
