Rookie engine question

On this 3.0 motor, I can see the AC compressor platform on the right as it is on my 3.0, but what is the unit on the left that has the belt running to the alternator fan? Is this an early 3.0 motor? Thanks.

Is that to circulate the AC thru the car? Was this an early 3.0 thing because my '82 didn't have it when I removed the AC and heater blower motor.

no, these were a early/finicky way to meet emission standards by essentially pumping clean air into the exhaust to dilute pollutants.

Would it be safe to say this is an early '78-'80 3.0?

It's a model year 78 or 79.

The smog pump was done away with for the model year 1980.

Actually that's incorrect. The fresh air was pumped into the exhaust to continue the combustion of unburnt hydrocarbons.
