help installing camshafts
Im installing my camshafts using waynes book...its pretty clear in the book which cam goes on the left and which cam goes on the right. My problem is that I dont know which side of the engine is left.
the cams are inserted from the back of the car, so is the left bank cylinders 1,2,3? thanks!!

+1. Left right is from rear of car or sitting in driver's seat looking forward.
In the PET diagram you can see the chain layout along with the cams. Part numbers, etc. I remember in Bruce Anderson's book he mentions the lobe orientation on the right cam make the lobes look like Rabbit ears. R for rabbit. Here's the PET link. http://www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf/originalparts/en/E_911_83_KATALOG.pdf

Odd number at the end of the casting number is left, even is right. Like "103" and "104". (Those are just examples and have no relation to the real numbers!)

Don't forget/skip setting parallel alignment of the chain sprockets, and put those cam/chain sprockets on correctly. Also, you need the proper chain rails/guides; five of one dimension and one different, and make sure those guides face the right way.

Engine Rebuild Book
The book describes left/right in one of the early intro chapters - I dog eared it because I kept confirming as I rebuilt my motor - after a while, I finally just wrote L and R on the case halves with a sharpie...
I like to simplify things to the max extent possible... Gordo

thanks for the input... i guess a rule of thumb would be "as you are sitting in the driver's seat"
left and right. I might still use that sharpie!!! ![]()

Unless, of course, you're in Japan, the UK, Hong Kong, Australia, or many other current or former parts of the British Empire ...
