Engine drop without transmission?

Hello,

I need to drop my engine for the first time due to broken head studs found when I went to check my valves.

I am just wondering what the disadvantage is of dropping the engine without the transmission attached. The tech section describes this but most threads I read drop both together.

Once dropped I will have to separate them to mount engine on stand anyways. Is there something I am missing?

i do it all the time. easy with a lift and a big trans jack. more challenging with jack stands and a floor jack. seems the majority here like to take the trans out with it.

I think most of us are "while you're in there" sort of people and since the trans comes out so easy it's nice just to give a once over and make sure nothing is going on. I dropped mine with, luckily I had a lift and a big role around so I just lowered the car right above the roll around, grabbed a ladder, undid the motor mounts, lifted the lift, and boom, my engine was now super easy and mobile to work on.

I was in the same boat regarding headstud replacement and pulled my engine out without removing the transmission. I did this with jack stands and floor jack on my driveway. I went this route because I thought it was easier 1-man job than wrestling both the engine and transmission out together. I have to agree that reinstalling is probably easier with the engine and trans together however it's certainly doable just putting the engine back in by itself.

Both together.. Way easier, less chance of damage.. Just don't forget to detach your shift coupler under the access panel on the tunnel, center rear floor!

I would think it would be easier to remove the two together. Unhook some sensor wires in the tunnel IIRC and unhook the shift coupler, remove two mount bolts and it comes right out with the engine. I have only done two engines in and out and it seemed pretty easy.

Don't forget the axles. They are usually what gives people pause.

BTW -- drop both the engine and transmission together -- or, better yet, use the technique I used and drop the entire car down so the engine touches your furniture cart, disconnect the engine and transmission from the car, and then lift the car leaving the engine and transmission behind. I have done it both ways, and found this much easier and safer.

2 hour engine-transmission drop in the driveway. Easy. I would not attempt the engine alone without a good lift for access. On the G50, you have to partial drop anyway, might as well take the whole thing down.
