Handling Problems...again

What makes a car handle and steer really well on a good, smooth road, but really poorly ie;steering wheel shake and pulling,on a not so good road???
I'm coming close to the end of my rope here...

Car is a 69S.Thanks in advance...

Mike-
That sounds a lot like what I was experiencing when my strut cartridge nut was loose.
On smooth roads is was pretty much OK, but I'd get a nibble (rapid small amplitude ocsillation) in the steering wheel every once in a while. It would come and go within the span of a few minutes. I thought it may have been my tires before I discovered my strut issue, but I think maybe now the loose strut had something to do with it. The other thing was the car became HIGHLY sensitive to truck ruts. It was really really bad when changing lanes through a stretch of road that was badly rutted. The car would enter the rut then dart across the lane very quickly, quite un-nerving.
Does that sound at all like what your car is doing?

re: handling problems

Chris...yes,that's what it feels like.It comes and goes, but most noticeable on not so smooth roads. I'm at my wit's end with this and would sure like to correct it. I've tried everything I can think of but nothing seems to work, including balances and alignments.
I have bump steer spacers but have not installed them yet. How did you fix your problem?
Thanks for the response...

Mikke-
The issue I found, and have not confirmed that it fixed the problem because my suspension is all apart for new bushings, was that the ring nut that holds the Bilstein insert in my Boge strut was very loose. When you would do a wheel bearing check, it would feel like the bearings were very very loose, but no degree of bearing tightening (reasonable levels) would make the play go away. When it got bad enough I pulled things apart and found the loose nut. Everything else in the suspension other than old a-arm bushings are on the newish side, so I could confidently eliminate worn ball joints and tie-rods as a possible cause. It is pretty easy to check, so I would suggest that be one of your first stops.

I recently replaced my ball joints and strut inserts. I had 3 experiences. I tightened the clamp nut at the bottom of the strut to the ball joint to spec and found in didn't clamp well enough, (found that out after a drive). Secondly the Boge inserts were too short by about 3/32", had to make up a spacer to get the clamping and stop the inserts from shaking around. Third, the castallated nut that holds the ball joint in the A arm really has to be tightened to spec, there's no to get away from using the proper tool cause my first attempt the nut came lose. Each of these 3 experiences on there own caused some interesting road handling experiences, not to mention the clunking from the front end
