sc flasher riddle ....

My 81sc has an on again - off again turn signal quirk that has now risen to the front burner of my to-do list ....

With no key in the ignition, my flashers and both turn signal directions will simply light up without flashing when activated.

With the key in, and turned to the "on" position, the flashers and both turn signals will light up and flash as expected.

Once the car has been started, the flashers and turn signals will revert back to simply lighting up when called upon, without flashing (just like the "no key in the ignition" reaction described above".

Flasher ? Ground ? Switch ? Voodoo ?

p.s, for kicks, I checked to see if they reacted the same with my headlights turned on and they did (i.e, no change from above)

Ideas ?

Thanks, Bill

added twist ...

For what its worth, it turns out the non flashing turn signal lights illuminating without the key in the ignition is inconsistent. The lights also are less bright compared to turning them on while the key is in and turned to the "on" position .

any ideas at all ?

My '82 SC recently started acting very similar to what you describe. I tracked it down to fractured solder joints at the circuit board inside the turn signal flasher. I reflowed the solder joints and the turn signals work like they should again.

Thanks for the tip ...

For the record, how exactly SHOULD everything work for each key/no key sequence that I described ??

Appreciated !

Replace the flasher relay.
I had random intermittent flasher/hazard issues in my '81.
New relay solved it.

The 4 way "hazards" should function with or without the key on.

With the key off, when you click the turn signal stalk either left or right, your parking lights on the selected side will light dimly. No flashing. European parking light function.

With the key on, the signal stalk will make the lights flash as normal for left or right turn.

Thanks Cooper,

I will replace the relay and see what happens. I appreciate knowing what actually should happen. I hope it is that easy ....
