Yep, with 134a it is not used at all. Even with R12 is is pretty much useless. Just use the pressures and temperature charts.

No..you need professional help.

Most shops will do the conversion for ~$200.

There are several (134?) things I would now recommend for anyone converting to R-134a refrigerant or having "opened" the system.

1. NEW A/C pressure rated Schrader valves.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/230970401650?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Thanks Karl, lesson learned.

2. A NEW receiver/dryer.

New Drier 1980 1989 Porsche 911 | eBay

Thanks Charlie...

3.) Red Dot 71R7500A trinary pressure switch.

http://www.amazon.com/Red-Dot-Trinary-Pressure-Switch/dp/B002AQ8TQ4

325 PSI high pressure cutoff.

Third switch element to used to power OEM(***) and aftermarket auxillary cooling fans but only once pressures rise to the most optimal efficiency range.

*** Cabin heat & front lip blower.

4.) Heat rejecting window/windshield(!) film.

Well ,to change to 134 i have replaced the receiver drier. Then the expansion valve.
That is all.
But in the same time i have replace all the necessary o rings.Rear condenser front condenser e.t.c.
O rings on a/c compressor. It is good to know a pro who has the tools to check for leaks without charging you an arm and leg.
Otherwise i think if you have some mechanical skills you can convert your self.

In my own situation, I have presently gone through my factory York R-12 system to convert to R-134A. I have flushed the system and replaced the drier, the hose between the drier and evaporator unit and the forward condenser fan. I have pulled a vacuum and it holds with no significant loss over 24 hours. Soon, I will attempt to charge the system to see what kind of cooling output I will get. There are a lot of knowledgeable individuals on this board when it comes to A/C in der Porsche and taking their advice will go along way to curing your issues. Unfortunately the upgrades to the stock system is not cheap and you will have to decide how far and how much you are willing to invest. In my own case, I am admitingly cheap and will go the low cost route and learn by my own mistakes.

Welcome West The AC shop I got my manifold guages from handed me these without charge. I compared them to the ones on your ebay link and they don't look exactly the same. There are also some hefty Schraders next to the red / high pressure caps but they cannot possibly be for our 911s. Can you make sense of this West?

No, it's not real. It would be hard to find a shop that would do a decent job of it for that little money. Yeah, you might find an indy that would do a half-azzed job of it for that kind of money, but why? Do it right the first time.

yes i forgot the valves and fittings for the new system gauges for the compressor.
The fittings come with different valves (short-wide) I took those of and used the original (thin).

The problem is that ALL Schrader valves of this type, 1/4", appear to be the same.

Price gouging... but FREE would raise my suspicions.

That was the cost to me to convert my 1992 LS400 and the '88 Carrera as much as 10 years ago but more recent a different shop did the '92 AeroStar.

I've been hearing that changing the dryer is a must but when I checked with the shop (Genes in Bellevue WA) that did the Lexus and 911 I was told that the extended, overnight, evacuation process dries the existing desiccant material which works satisfactorily well with R-134a.

In any case since purchasing a new drier is pretty inexpensive (Ebay, UAC, <$25) I would include it in any future R-134a conversions.

Maybe you'd like to pop over and observe 1 or 2 ~$200 conversions jobs in process/completion?

They get to RECLAIM any R-12 in the system, then attach a vacuum pump overnight, recharge with 25-40 ounces of R-134a at ~$2/ounce.

The '92 Aerostar cost including replacing a leaking HPRV that was part of the compressor.

wwest, you often claim to know quite a bit about a/c evacuation and charging, and yet here you say that you pay shops to do this work for you? Why is that?

wwest, I don't know if you live east or west side of state but, on the west side you are going to pay from $225 - $250 for a evacuation and recharge of like product not counting if you require leak test or any swapping of components. So, if you switch from R12 to R134A your going to need a minimum of R134A adapters. You may have to add in the cost disconnecting hoses for flush and you know that won't be cheap labor. Hey, good AC mechanics have to pay the same amount you do for rib eye steaks.

I can afford to..?

The issue of how much oil to put in, how much came out, seems critical and is best left to an expert.
