Late style Boge in a mid year?
Anyone know if there is any difference in the housings? Can I install a late style (86-89) strut assembly in a mid year?

They will fit. However, the 86-89 strut housing has 3.5" brake caliper spacing so it will require the A caliper vs. M caliper which is 3" spacing. Also, the Carrera had wider rotors (I believe 24mm vs 20), I'm not sure if that means the strut will have a different spindle or hub.

Thank you Vern, I'm aware of the caliper spacing - that's actually why I'm buying them - so I can upgrade my brakes. I'm planning on upgrading to Bilstein Sports also so timing is good.

Ok, so I think the only thing you need to confirm is can you run either size rotors (Carrera or SC) on the Carrera struts. But as far as the housing go, they will fit definitely into your car.

If not, I'll just buy Carrera rotors. Mine are getting pretty worn.

abides.

Remember that there are also different boge inserts.
Part way through '85 they switched from an internal thread on the strut housing to an external thread.

Thank you Graham - I'm guessing that's the only difference between SC and Carrera Strut housings? Our host sells the Bilstein Sport inserts for Carrera Boge strut housings - that's what I'm planning to buy.

The hubs fit all of these struts until the 964 design. So you can use all of them interchangeably. You've got caliper to hub down. And you know about caliper to rotor matching. So you are set. The change from "innies" in terms of holding the strut shock into the housing happened sometime in the 3.2 era. Graham says mid-1985, and doubtless he's dealt with the timing. The later housings have what I call the pipe cap end - the threads on the strut are external at the top, not internal. You need to get shocks which work with the cap style you have, though for some there are various spacers which will adapt one to the other. The key is that the cap, be it inner or outer, fit snuggly down around the top of the shock, and press the shock down - that way the top of the shock can't move side to side, or wiggle up or down.
The first time I had to swap struts (both were bend from vigorous DEing), I ended up with late Carrera struts on my '77. Worked just fine, no problem (though at that time I had to have a simple adapter machined for my shocks to work right). So not to worry. Good way to upgrade to larger front calipers - the 3.5" spacing ones. |
