I have replaced both timing chains on my car and have set the valve drop (for both sides) as near as I can to 1.25mm as suggested for my engine in the Bently manual.
I am well aware of the potential issues that could occur if the valve timing is slightly out. I am able to turn the engine over using a spanner on the crank pulley without a problem and I'm sure I have done the job correctly - but is there anything I could do to double check before I start the engine? Is there still a chance that the valves could hit the pistons when spun at hight RPM ? Setting the valve timing didn't seem too complicated - have I missed something? I removed tensioner then the cam pulley (RH side only at this point) while the crank was at Z1 and the dist. was pointing upwards (to the mark on the dist housing) 930 marks on the cams positioned at top. Removed chain from pulley - refitted pulley and turned the cam AC slightly to close the valves. Grind chain link and link new chain to old chain. Rotate crank CW remove old chain. Crank back to Z1 then re adjust cam to put the 930 marks at the top again. - refit tensioner. clamp tensioner to top of housing to tension the chain and set valve timing using dial gauge. After 360' (dist pointing downwards) the valve has dropped by1.18mm (after I removed the pin on cam and adjusted) dial gauge goes back to 0 after further 360' - check this by rotating several times. The RH Chain was done the same but the start point for the crank was Z1 with the dist pointing downwards NOT upwards. After fiddling the valve drop was set to 1.21mm or ther abouts. The Bently manual give a tolerance of 1.10 - 1.40mm for my 3.2 If anybody could suggest a check list to double check my work by it would be a help - you often can't spot mistakes in your own work. Many Thanks Richard

Sounds to me like you were very thorough and understood the procedure. If you can rotate the crank freely I would say start the engine.
Regards,
