valve tapit noise
Is it normal to here valve tapit noise after the motor is at normal opp temp? Mine is quiet upon start up but when it gets warm it sounds like a bug motor. It is close to its first oil change since I bought the car. Also it dosent leak much
and I know it should use oil but, how much would be concidered normal? ![]() |

When was the last time they were adjusted? If you don't know, then it sounds like this would be a good time to do them.

Don't assume something is wrong. Moderate and even tappet noise at idle on a warm engine is perfectly normal and is expected on a car with properly adjusted valves. I'd be more worried if there was no tappet noise. This would mean they are too tight.
Check your records to see if it has been done in the last 10 to 12k miles. If not, it may be worth the effort. The good news is that the valves don't tend to go 'way' out of adjustment on their own under normal circumstances. If you hear that one or two are noticeably noisy, I'd vote for the adjustment. If you know someone else with a 911, listen to theirs and compare. Also...a quart of oil per 1000 miles is considered normal for an air cooled Porsche. I think the factory spec is 1 qt per 600 miles, but that much usage would make me nervous. Best,

tapets
thats what I thought it seems normal for it to use a bit of oil 2500 miles and 2.5 quarts that seems normal to me and that is what she is using. Thanks for the info.

Speedy1, I have the same thing with mine and my valves are right on. The valves have been adjusted twice since I first noticed the light tapit at operating temp.
