Post Putting 911 engine on P201 "engine holding fixture"?

Hi all,

I'll keep this shorter than most of my ??s. I cut my hand pretty bad last week so my typing is too slow right now.

I'm looking for help on how to install the engine holder on the case of my engine. Can you post pictures or links of a 911 engine on the p201 holder? Or share any tips/info?

I picked up a P201 holder and it doesn't look like it wants to bolt up tight to the case with the flywheel on. It is clearly made to do that (can use a special flywheel lock with the holder installed on the case).

I want to have my brother install it for me but it doesn't look right the way we tried.

ps. Engine is '79 SC 3.0 with heat exchangers still installed.

some yolks had to have a notch cut out to clear the heat exchanger joint. all mine clear the flywheel ok. usually i remove the clutch. put it on the left side as you're looking at it.

It seems there are different P 201 tools around. Only problems I had is the TDC pick up from the 3,2.

Ah-ha - left side as you lok at it. That is the key. When I have it on the left side as I look at it - it is hitting the joint between the crossover tube and the pass side heat exchanger. There is a notch in the yoke, but is offset from the joint by 10mm or so.

I guess this will only be a problem until I take the old exchangers off - the early style SSIs I got should clear it easily.

One more detail - do you use the transmssion mounting studs to mount the engine, or do you remove them and use bolts? I want to use the studs, do I need spacers - the threads on the tranny mounting studs (at least the starter one) only have threads part way.

the notch obviously needs to be enlarged with a torch or grinder. use spacers on the studs. i have a box of various lengths of tube spacers to fit the different stud lengths. be careful with alloy cases, as the helicoil has been known to pull out of the top. don't ask how i know.

Hello

I made tubular nuts on a lathe. Just drill them up until the last 1"

You also can use a thick tube and weld on a nut.

Be aware that the engines have different studs an you need several longnuts.
I stamped them with the enginetype and color coded them to avoid guesssing. Make them a bit shorter so you can see the end off the stud and sometimes people used shorter studs and full thread lenght is recomended.

I used a grinder to make the notch bigger on my five-arm yoke to clear everything.

Yes, is it a record? The reason I did so was because I thought I had read a recent post wherein a person was having a difficult time fitting an engine yoke to a more-modern crossover-pipe-equipped 3.0 SC engine.

I searched and couldn't find evidence of the recent post, so in the interest of possibly helping whomever I revived this thread from the dead-thread pool. No need to thank me or anything.

Did you ever solve the problem you had in your post: P201 Won't fit in Engine Stand? I've got the same issue now, about 7mm difference between the shaft of the yoke and the inside of the tube. I made a sleeve out of aluminum flashing which I coiled and fit inside the tube but I'm not sure this is the best solution. For some reason my pictures are not loading.

My problem was actually the opposite, the P201 mandrel was too large for the El Cheapo NAPA stand. As you can see, I ended up with the one from Harbor Freight. . .

The yoke I botrowed wont fit on the left side due to oil cooler and heat exchanger. It doesn't have a notch and its a borrowed tool, so I don't want to make one.
Is it okay to mount in the right side ? Seems to fit on that side
