I am looking to up grade my steering wheel, I currently have the original bus wheel from 1973.
Has any one placed a 930 wheel in the early model 911? how do you like it? Any other wheels recommended? Anything I should know before swapping out steering wheels? |

There was a pretty huge steering wheel thread recently here:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/012573.html Highly subjective decision. There are lots of great steering wheels out there. The factory "930S" wheel is a popular favorite. For an early car, I like the Momo Prototipo (good luck finding one, I saw a NOS one recently for $400) or the Mod.07 which is similar and "only" $160 or so. The Monte Carlo is nice too. Most of the other aftermarket and Porsche factory wheels IMHO are too "modern" looking for the early 911s. Cheers, Chris C. [This message has been edited by campbellcj (edited 09-20-2001).] |

I'm always willing to post a picture of my 930S wheel in my early car. In fact, here are two:

Just installed the 930S in my 77. It's a work of art.

OK, here's a pic of the Nardi/Personal "Fittipaldi" wheel I've presently got in my 911. I love this steering wheel; unfortunately, I think the wheels as well as the hubs & horn buttons are NLA now.

hey campbell
what's the purpose of tilting the speedometer? i've seen tachs tilted (quick eyeballing a vertical needle for shifting), but never seen it done with speedometer. Enlighten me, please. thanks mike |

Mike, you'll understand when you sit in a car with a smaller-diameter steering wheel. As great as the smaller wheels feel, less of the gauges are visible with them, so you turn the speedo so that the useful part of it (say 50-100 mph) is visible.

I rotate the gauges in my p-cars so I can see the desired range of the gauge dial(s) and/or important idiot lights. In the case of the 911 speedo, I can't see the 60-90mph range very well with that steering wheel. I figure I'm more likely to get a ticket for going 80-90 than 30-40 so I like to be able to see that part of the dial clearly!
One of the downsides to the smaller steering wheels....the 911 dash is designed for that darn "bus" wheel that seems like 3 feet across when you're used to a smaller "sport" wheel! ------------------ Chris C. 73 914 2.0 70 911E Targa campbell.chris@gte.net |

Doh! Sometimes the simplest solutions...
I've been contemplating replacing my MOMO Corse with a larger diameter, thinner wheel in my '86. I can't see the speedo worth a damn - I never thought of rotating it. A bigger wheel would be nicer for navigating parking lots - my car is a daily driver... |
