'New' sound pad?
My original sound pad disintegrated within years... I put in foil backed foam years ago. Now I'm going to replace it when I pull the engine in a few weeks.
In the Pelican catalog, the sound pads have this note: " The material of the sound mat has been updated and is now made of the same lighter weight material used on current late model Porsches. " I'm assuming this means they no longer self desctruct like my '89 did? Anybody use one of these? Thanks, Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 365k miles |

Chuck, I bought the new version and two years in, it still looks fine. I think that the lighter weight will allow for a longer life.

Chuck,
I know you mentioned you had the foil pad, probably from ApBiz. I used the ApBiz "Ultimate Sound Pad" and could not be happier. It is pricey, but I think it is worth it. It has felt, sandwiched between heavy foil, and then has a black dense foam skin bonded to the foil. It's installed foil side to the firewall and black dense foam skin to the outside. It looks just like stock when installed. In this pic, it just shows the foil one, not the black skinned one, just an oversite I think. Anyway, I also think it deadens more sound, at least that is my experience. Pelican Parts - Product Information: PEL-APBZ-ESPULT-B

uwanna, that looks like the pad i put in. i was told it was much better than the others. i dont remember that bane though.
i put mine in with the silver facing the engine, like in the pic. i will tell you this, i had to cut just a little where the deck lid shocks go and that stuff was EXTREMELY hard to cut.

I don't have the AppBiz one, I just have foil lined foam from Summit or Jegs. It's held up ok but could use replacing. (Nothing like the air-filter-clogging disintegration the stock one is famous for).
I'm looking at the utlimate one also, but is it heavy? I'm particular about weight to my car, esp in the rear. I'm at 2750 lbs and don't want to go any higher! NOTE to Pelican - please provide weight of items in catalog in GRAMS for more precision!!! Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 365k miles |

I've had one of the new style Porsche pads in my engine bay for about 5 yrs now. Has held up great. Cleaned off as much of the old glue as I could and then applied new pad with 3M spray adhesive.

I eliminated the pad and used a water based sound deadening paint on material called QuietCoat. QuietCoat - Leading Sprayable Viscoelastic Polymer for Noise and Vibration Damping - Coatings - quietrock
It reduces noise better than asphalt material but weighs almost nothing and looks factory...resists rust and is easy to use. No fumes and easy to remove from paint brush. ![]() |

While I was seeking a solution I couldn't find much info on the Appbiz Ultimate Pad. Pictures below show both sides and the thickness. I measured the thickness to be 17mm.
