How to kill a battery for the holidays

After just dealing with bad battery... did some digging around for preservation intel. Since we all got one, thought it appropriate to share find on why they die... (EDIT: Just realized I meant for subject line to be "How NOT to kill battery...")
  • Batteries sit too long between charges. As little as 24 hours in hot weather and several days in cooler weather.
  • Battery is stored without some type of energy input.
  • "Deep cycling" an engine starting battery. Remember these batteries can't stand deep discharge.
  • Undercharging of a battery to only 90% of capacity will allow sulfation of the battery using the 10% of battery chemistry not reactivated by the incompleted charging cycle.
  • Heat of 100 plus F., increases internal discharge. As temperatures increase so does internal discharge. A new fully charged battery left sitting 24 hours a day at 110 degrees F for 30 days would most likely not start an engine.
  • Low electrolyte level - battery plates exposed to air will immediately sulfate.
  • Incorrect charging levels and settings. Most cheap battery chargers can do more harm than good. See the section on battery charging.
  • Cold weather is also hard on the battery. The chemistry does not make the same amount of energy as a warm battery. A deeply discharged battery can freeze solid in sub zero weather.
  • Parasitic drain is a load put on a battery with the key off. More info on parasitic drain will follow in this document.

Vids exist on how to resurrect dead batt with epson salts. Cannot confirm this works yet.

For you guys hibernating 911s for winter... look into battery tenders. Credit to Jim for this note.

Question

I probably ought to get a C-TEK 3300 for my Montana Winters. These are trickle chargers correct?

I've gone back to two batteries on my '73 with new Interstate U911 models. Since I have two batteries, what's the preferable method to hook up the charger?

Correct on trickle Tom. Would guess on hook up so not saying anything there. Montana... Damm I miss winter with snow! How bout some snow drift pics Tom?!?!

Posi first then neg side using the alligator clips.

For your car, I would use the quick disconnect set up, very convenient. Buddy actually wired his into the cab so when he pulls up into his garage, he opens the door and plugs it right in.

For me, I opted to leave it in the FRUNK ( front trunk ). The only issue is I have to use a stick to keep the Frunk light off. Yes, my frunk light works :-P

Insure terminals and connectors are clean. Good thing about the C-Tek 3300 you can leave it on there. It will cycle on it's own. You will see green then later back to yellow charging but really it is in maintenance cycle once fully charged.

I have the next model up of the Ctek for my Boxster. It sits 2 months at a time (vacation house) and the charger works great. I'll be getting one for the SC soon too. Highly recommended.
