Unhappy Factory Service Manuals backordered indefinitely

Hi everyone, I just bought my first Porsche, a '71 911E RS lookalike. Here's a gratuitous glamour shot:

It needs a bunch of "little things" so I got the Haynes manual (worthless, as expected) and the 101 projects book, which has a bunch of good ideas.

What I really need, though, are the factory service manuals. Pelican says they don't know when they'll be in stock. The other place I found with a quick web search--www.my-porsche.com--says January at the earliest. Does anyone know a source for these? I checked Ebay and the classifieds here and on Rennlist in the hopes of finding a used set, but no luck.

Thanks for any help!

Jon

Thumbs up gratuitous glamour shot . . .

Nice! Very nice.

Welcome; and I, for one, hope to see more gratuitous glamour shots.

Unfortunately, it's appearance outstrips it's performance by a good margin right now--but I'll be working on that!

I've found out the car was put together by Keith Peare as a D.E. car, then subsequently sold to "Joe" at P.A.R. who did a bit of work on it then sold it to the gentleman from whom I bought it. So, it's hardly original but it's light and handles like a go-kart.

It has a 2.4E motor with Webers and Bursch headers/muffler and the stock 901 gearbox.

Suspension is track-stiff, with (I'm told) 22/28 torsion bars. In fact, I think most of the suspension travel is sidewall flex. Tires are 245/50-15 rear and 225/50-15 front on 8s and 7s. Haven't gotten under it yet to figure out the rest. Once I do, I'll post some pics so all you experts can tell me what swaybars and shocks I have.

Bummer on the manuals indeed - I heard rumours that Porsche was required by federal law to release them on CD-ROM or something weird like that.

What was the price range for this car? I'm sortof looking for an RS-look car like this one...

federal law to release them on CD-ROM ?
C'mon. . . that makes as much sense as putting a law on something silly like toilet tank size. That would never happen.

Jon, nice car! The manuals show up on e-bay and at vintage races/lit. shows every so often, so you should come across them eventually.

Wayne, I heard some of those early cars in excellent condition are available at the Pomona swap meets for under 10K.

Darn! The manual backorders, I mean..not the good looking car. Evren wanted a set shiipped here so he could have 'em when he picked up his car. Another thread I'll have to bring to his attention...

Gawd- that's lovely! Suits the colour really well too.
Show us more. I think a whole bunch of guys on this board want to do that sort of conversion.

Wayne- what you need is known as a 'Pomona T'; plentiful, cheap & cheerful, lightweight and as common as heck. Curt should be able to point you in the right direction as he's been keeping an eye out for them.

Matt!

This is your conscience speaking. I command you to add the driving or non-driving status of each of your cars in your signature immediately!

Jon - that really is a cool looking car. I'd be interested in more pics too.

Try this:

www.route30classics.com
This guy has a whole bunch of those manuals. Give him a try, and BTW they are used, but not abused, so cheaper. Good luck.

The agreement to prevent government legislation basically said they would have to release something. It didn't specifiy the medium things would be released on. To see what they (Porsche) have released, do a search on fedworld.gov. I'm still trying to get Brad at PCNA to answer a few questions so I can make a (sellable) product out of my hammer.

Right - I guess the CD-ROM part isn't mandated, but the Gov is saying that the car manufacturers have to release the manual and tech information to the general public. I believe that it has to do with anti-trust (actually, I would guess - I have no idea), as the dealers shouldn't have access to information that independents don't.
