'87 G50 external thermostat issues

It seems like the external thermostat on my '87 3.2 may not be opening. After a fairly long drive, the front oil pipes never seem to get warm. While the temps here are in the 30's the car seems to up to operating temperature. Can anyone tell me what is the normal failure mode for these? Prior to me buying this car, it sat for almost 13 years.

Parts still available? Pistons, sprints etc...?

Thanks
