Question about rear emblem - Gold to Silver

I'm in need of a rear emblem. My original was probably anodized black and over time, worn to silver (just like my rear grill). I have a '74

I found a new rear emblem on eBay but it has a gold finish. Is it possible to polish off the gold to a silver/alum color and if so, what is the best method. I'm assuming lot's of elbow grease but maybe someone has a good idea that will save me some headaches.

My orig emblem:

Easiest way...buy one from our host @ 25.50: 1974 Porsche 911 Base Coupe/Targa - Exterior Trim - Page 1

There is probably some magic potion on the internet that will remove anodizing from aluminum, buff, shine...shine some more and now you have a nice shiny aluminum colored emblem that needs to be black? Rattle can it??...or send it out and have it re-anodized.

I restored a '65 with gold lettering on the deck lid...I think I paid 125.00 or so plus two way shipping to have it restored. When it came back it looked like "new money".

I think I would just buy a new one and keep the original in my desk drawer...

Vern,
The Authenticity Guide states:
"the 911 insignia was in bright anodized aluminum for 1974. In 1975 the 911 was flat black for the base model. The 911S insignia was black for 1974-1977, with bright anodized aluminum or gold available for 1975.

I could use a nice bright anodized 911 for my '74, if you're changing yours to black

Easier said than done. I purchased my emblem from our host on August 15th. It was $67 (not the $25.50 quoted). Possibly because it was a special order item from Germany and they added shipping and special order charges.

That said, I've received numerous e-mails stating that it is still back ordered and will ship as soon as they find one. Of course, they took my money instantly, which was about 6 months ago.

Also, I admit that my vanity kicked in and I bought a 911s emblem. Although my car was not born an "s", it has every single component of an "s" and then some.

Now I just need to dull up my new gold emblem (in the mail) back to bright aluminum.

Stoddard*com has them for about 30.00...interesting that the "911S" emblem is just over twice as much??

Everybody "says" they have them but when I called a few places (including Stoddard), I was told that this is a special order from the factory in Germany and availability is dependent on them.

I appreciate the offer but I already bought the gold emblem and it should be in my mailbox today. I'm going to start by trying to get the gold finish off. I'll see what I can do this weekend and if I am not happy with the results, I'll get in touch.

Try using the plastic dip first. They make a bright aluminum one that you can get at www.dipyourcar.com. If you don't like it, then peel it off.

Since the 911S emblem was available in gold in '75, and my car, although it's a '74 has a '75 engine, I went with a gold emblem to replace the deteriorated black one. Authentic in a cock-eyed way, but I like it better and that's what matters to me.

Hmmm, surprisingly looks good gold on a silver car. I may have to see how it looks on mine.

I am ignorant of what my car should have on its behind. As it stands it has a Gold lettering of Porsche and a silver lettering 911T emblem and I don't know whether that is a standard/normal scenario or whether it should be gold or silver or both. I like the current look but think it is slightly confused. It may be normal but my assumption is that it should be one type/colour or the other.

Anyway,e nough pontificating and enjoy the New Year,

Neil

To remove anodizing from aluminum, you'd use sodium hydroxide... a chemical found in household cleaners. Easy Off oven cleaner is a good one. Another is Castrol Super Clean. For larger items, like and engine grill, you can visit your local anodizing shop where they likely have a large dip tank do this. I took all of my faded black anodized window moldings and trim to one and the cost was small, like $50. From there, you can polish or re-anodize!
