Post videos to compare 915 gear box shifter play slop bushings

I am curious if my 915 shifter is adjusted correctly, since I've nothing to compare it to.
Factory short shift kit, and I am pretty sure the PO replaced all the bushings, etc.
It seems to be working fine, but I thought I'd post a video for comparison, for others in the same boat.

1) I am curious if the amount of play while in Neutral is normal.
I have that in the first few seconds of the video.

2) How about the centering return action coming out of 5th? Does yours have this?
I've read about the money shift from 5->2
I simply just pop it out of 5th, and it centers right above 4,
and then I pull straight down into 4th. Seems pretty reliable.

Looks pretty typical for a stock shifter. Mine was like that prior to my addition of the Seine spring-loaded gate kit.

Here is my 915 with Factory Short Shift, Sienes Gate Shift Kit, Whisperer's Coupler ( Derlin ) Bushings:

Sugarwood, without a gate shift kit, you will have that OEM Neutral Flop with the 915.

+1 Normal

Drago, thanks for posting your video.

I was actually disappointed that you didn't demonstrate the lack of neutral flop b/c of your gates.
Your shifter appears to really center very precisely coming out of 2nd.

I am actually laughing out loud at how geeky this thread is.

Great and well overdue thread.

It would also be good if someone posted a video of shifting whilst actually driving.
I did one ages ago but I can't find it on my hard drive.

Not sure why it didn't upload in a higher resolution, but it gets the point across.

Stock 915 shifter. I did replace the bushings last year and it is a lot tighter and kinda springs back to center a bit more than the worn bushings.

slodave,
Wow, your neutral slop really seems minimal.
I like how it centers when you push it left and let go.
Maybe my bushings need to be examined.

Those of you who have your shifters dialed in, how much side to side movement does the shifter have we when in gear. This is my 1st 911 and hear and read so much about the 915 and shifting. Mine has factory short shifter and 3/4" movement(at knob) until it hits resistance in all gears. Normal?

The max. left-right distance the shift lever travels is dictated by the rubber buffer plate in the shift housing and partially by the various geometries of the particular short shifter installed. The shorter the throw distance from stock, generally the narrower the neutral free play. In all cases, these motions are negated by any slop caused by worn shift linkage components, mainly 3 bushing locations. The net motion is transferred to the gearbox.

Tim/oh,
If the gearbox upshifts smoothly in all gears, all is good. Downshifting is another matter as it also includes a desired coordination of clutch, engine speed, downshifting techniques as well as effects of cumulative wear on specific synchro mechanisms; 1-4.

If my car were not in the shop for a new wevo shifter among other things, I would video it just as an example of non-ideal. It shifts well enough, but the synchro for second, and to a less degree 4th is pretty bad. I feel like there is a lot of slop. The bushings were replaced in the last 6 or so years, and it has a stomski racing coupler, but things need a refresh in my eyes (only having ever driven one other 915 which was a disaster with it popping out of 2nd and 3rd).

Would be nice to have a before and after video...

This is exactly how mine is Sugarwood but leather clad and I purposely tightened the tension adjustment 24MM jam nut. I like the feel, seems more purposeful to me but I know it will take 10th of a second off my time Oh well

Mine did not return to center with the old bushings. Push it left and it stayed. I believe the bushing on the long shaft that runs through the tunnel had finally disintegrated last year and I could not get into any gear(?). Anyway, it was a lot tighter after new bushings. Good luck!

mreid's shifter also has almost zero neutral slop.
Very strong centering action!!

What do I need to do to remove the lateral neutral slop of my shifter?

If you want the OEM "FLOP" out, you will need a Gate Shift Kit. Sienes is affordable and pretty easy to install but it needs to be welded for more optimal set up. While you are in there, you should replace the ball socket and rod bushings. Coupler only if it is sloppy.

My 911 was my dad's before giving it to me. Lots of sentimental value. I do not want to chance destroying the original shift knob. My plan is to find a used stock shifter, so I can put mine away. I will be running one. A friend at a local Porsche shop is keeping an eye out for one.

Slodave,
I recently bought a OEM 915 shift knob from a guy who replaced his entire shifter.
In other words, he's got a stock 915 shifter lying around with no knob.
I will PM you his username.
