Engine damage due to high performance starter

Hi Guys,
I'm building for a long time racing engines. Now I had an RSR-engine failure due to a crappy starter !! The timing chain is skipped, broken rocker arms, valves crooked! Happens in 5 seconds !!!!!!!!!!!
The starter turns on the wrong side! I admit have not been tested to the direction of rotation. Did anyone of you this problem already? From the Manufacturer I get no response.
Which starter you use?
Greetings Mario

I bought a high torque starter from this site and am very pleased with it....works well and half the weight.
Is your starter wired backwards?

Sorry to hear about the defective starter and subsequent damage. One hardly thinks of the ramifications when an engine cranks in the wrong direction with fully operational ignition and fuel systems. Not a good thought.

However, posting the info here should warn others to bench-test a new starter in order to:

1) Confirm it works
2) Confirm the pinion gear engages at the correct distance
3) Confirm it rotates in the correct direction.

Maybe mislabeled instead of defective. DC motors can run in either direction depending on battery polarity connections. Thus, some starters are wired to run clockwise or counterclockwise, then fitted to a vehicle-specific housing, pinion gear, linkage, etc. for installation on passenger or driver side. IOW, your new/replacement starter might swing one of two ways. Suggest a quick bench test with jumper cables before installation.

Here's a quickie visual reminder:

The POV is from the gear end of the starter (small drive gear, A) as installed. The larger driven gear represents the flywheel ring gear (engine rotates clockwise as viewed from the rear of the car).

Back in the day when I still did water coolers, I got a new bosch 924 starter that spun backwards. Now why doesn't it want to start?

Hi Guys,

the starter comes from hi performance of america !!!!!!

I have the engine back together. 7 valves are crooked and 5 rocker arms are broken. I will probably go down as the dumbest engine builder in the history. The manufacturer has still not responded. I think he should send me a free starter!
I wish you all a happy new year and never forget to consider a new starter

Greetings from Switzerland Mario

Holy Caca Mario,

Yes they should send you a new starter.

Don't be so hard on yourself, I'm quite sure that 99.9% would never check for the rotation before putting it in (I did not), they might check that it work...

A while back there was a bunch of flywheel from O.E.M. that got ship with a Non-Magnetic pick-up... lots of hours was lost on that one (luckily mine was Ok) mind you that your damage is both time and big CHF down the drain.

Hang in there

Bonne Année a toi aussi

JJ
