Carerra Trim Question
Do all Carerras have a Carerra trim badge on the rear deck? I'm looking at a 86 with tail without the trim badge. I haven't seen one without yet, and was curious about this. Current owner says tail is factory stock, and indicates no mods have been made.
Not a big deal, just want to know. |

I think I recall reading somewhere that you could have the script deleted/not installed if desired. Porsche would do all sorts of things at your request- all it takes is $$$.
Edit: BTW, I took mine off and stuck it on my toolbox. I don't like my cars cluttered up with badges and trim and all that jazz. I like 'em plain. Just my preference.

Yep, they all have [had?] 'em.
Maybe it was the closest the PO could get to a naked tail?

In fact, it takes a lot of money. A friend of mine just ordered a new Boxster S and it cost him an inordinate amount of money to have the Boxster S taken off the trunk as an option. Another interesting thing - Porsche will absolutely not sell you a car without the hood badge - they'll take everyting else off (Boxster, Carrera, etc.), but they won't take off the hood badge.
As for your problem, who knows what's happened to the script in the last 15 years. My 911SC had a Carrera script on it when I bought it - I guess one to the previous owners liked the look better than the 911SC. If it really bothers you, order a new script from Pelican - that's what I did. P.S. I thought I heard or read somewhere that the installation of a tail covers up the holes for attaching the badge. So, if you install an aftermarket tail, you either have to relocate the badge or take it off completely. Can anybody back this up?

My 86 cab has an original Porsche turbo tail (yeah I know it looks real big, I just don't have the cash to change it..) and the decklid does not have the script on it, but I would agree that I am sure the PO removed it at sometime. My car is black so I don't really miss the badging anyways...

I am pretty sure I saw an option that said something like "Carrera Script Delete" or words to that effect in one of those books that go into detail about year to year differences. Probably not an "expensive" option like a Cabriolet Hardtop.

My 86 did not have one on, I ordered one from Pelican. They just use a strong double sided tape and can even be removed afterward by applying a little heat. I think the script, ready to install, was about $30.

The carrera script is a pia when washing or polishing, when mine got loose I removed it. It might not look totally correct but it's lots easier to live with. If I ever get the originality disease It's easy enough to put back

Some Carreras did not come with the script on the rear lid...my '88 Commemorative Edition does not have one due to the 'delete script option' (but I've heard of some CE's which do have a scropt).

The stock Carrera tail will not cover the script, but it does look awkward if left in the original "no tail" position. I installed a factory tail and replaced the script with the stick on variety down to a more normal looking position.
Not sure about the turbo tail, but I would assume that it covers it up.

The only thing the "bothers" me about it is that if the script was on all cars, then why doesn't this one have it if the owner says no mods were made. If it is a delete option, no problem, if I can find that this was the case. If, on the other hand, there has been a mod like the deck lid being replaced or after market add of the tail, then I wonder what else the owner could be "unaware" of.
Otherwise, having or not having the script is of no concern. |

Hi JR, I had the same concerns when I purchased my CE (as I had already test driven one WITH the script), and was 'curious' about why it was missing on the one I eventually purchased. Although I don't recall the 'code' from memory, it's there along with all of the other 'option codes' (I did look them all up). If you're 'worried', then just cross-check the option codes for the car.

Yes, it was definitely a factory option to omit the rear script. The number you should look for on the options stickers is "498", which is the code for "without rear model designation".
