Wow, really cool video, I just watched it, now how am I supposed to sleep!!

Maybe I'll try to get ahold of DP motorsports as you suggest. However I see you have a similar picture of a green 911 with Iroc fenders. Im wondering what you would charge for a high res copy of it and what is the highest resolution you have for that? I want to blow it up for the back wall of my garage so it has to be quite high resolution.

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback guys! (Alex we are waiting you here! First beer at the PK is on me.)

After a few sketchy laps -with rear tires that would barely be usable in the side of a boat- and after realizing that I'm getting closer and closer to a close contact with the...quite unforgiving Nurburgring guardrails it was time for new tires!

As I said in a previous post I attempted to cure some of the balance issues(and the relatively lacking front end grip) with a slightly more square setup. So the fronts were replaced with 225/50 15 Toyo R888(from 205/50 15) and the rear remained 235/50 15 R888.

However...as always there was a surprise in what I thought would be a simple swap. While removing the rear passenger tire from the rim I noticed signs of extensive contact on the inside.

A quick glimpse on the car and the contact point was easily spotted...

I don't know if this is a common problem but to me it doesn't look like it has an easy solution. The oil lines cannot really be moved, the wheels can't be spaced out since they are already slightly touching on the outside as well on the fender lip(which I'm not super keen on rolling). Any suggestions appreciated...

The car runs 15x9 Fuchs replicas with...unknown to me offset. Seamed to worked perfectly fine and the contact isn't actually perceptible when driving(and I think is because of the Nurburgring unique bumps and compressions). I wouldn't like to go to a narrower wheel/tire combo for no reason since the car actually feels undertired and not the opposite so...since I couldn't find an easy fix I did the only thing I could.

I drove. I drove the car as much and as hard as I could...

In the last couple of weeks, during quiet mid-week afternoons, towards the end of TF/public sessions I enjoyed some of the best driving I've had on the Nordschleife. Ever.

The car sure is demanding in a track like the 'Ring. Especially since we never had enough time to properly bond. After some interesting moments trying to show to each other how easily we can 'kill' each other we found some balance.

And it is so much fun. So much bloody fun. I always thought that my no-ABS, no traction control, turbo MX-5 was a raw car but the analog sensory overload of the 911 is...special. And the 'Ring multiplies it times 10.

I think the 3.0 SC is an ~8:30 BtG car which while not fast is certainly not slow. I can't hide the fact that I'm already thinking what the future steps should be and how I could start improving the car but for now I just don't want to start taking it apart and waiting for parts(or to have the money for the right parts)and without realizing it find myself to another endless project and of course end up...not driving!

So back to driving...when not on track we spend some quality time on the beautiful roads of the Eifel area...but most of the times I have to confess I end up just parking it after a drive and look at it from the distance as the sun sets at Nurburg.

And for those precious moments I'm happy. Childishly, stupidly happy.

Nice thread! the solution can be rather simple - The oil line contact may be eliminated by making the lines oval in the small area of contact this can can be done with careful blunt force (hammer) don't go too far and it will provide no significant restriction. After that, place some aluminum tape over the area to provide a small sacrificial layer of protection but more important to see if you are still making contact. Wearing through that line would probably not end in a good scenario.

That is a common problem.
On some years the lines were recessed into the chassis. You could cut and weld the chassis, but a more common solution is to use up-and-over lines from Elephant racing.

(pick the high clearance line for your year of car)

I didn't have to go that route though. Here is my 73 with a factory recess in the chassis that the lines fit in

P.S.

I really like that "H" line in the Elephant diagram that goes up and over the transmission as well. No lines in the way under the engine.

Wayner the Elephant Racing solution is actually very nice(although it's more than 400 bucks just for the two small high clearance hose). Will look further into it. Maybe I can get something made locally or even get away with slightly massaging the original pipe.

Luccia feel free to do so!

I'll add a fresher low 8:30 lap onboard later today. Still so much more time into it...

Mythos, check your engine number. I was told that I had an SC 3.0 in mine but it turned out to be a much more rare and desirable carrera 3.0 engine (930/02)

As promised a video of a recent lap...

I was very lucky to get one of these few rare quiet afternoon laps. Almost no traffic, which is something almost impossible at the 'Ring. Unfortunately this was my 'warm up' lap so I was very conservative and not really on it(since I was sure I'll get another one in straight after). Of course as Murphy's law dictates in my 'fast' lap I found a single car that wouldn't move for literally 2 km so...bye bye clean lap.

There is probably a good 10 sec to be removed from that lap with some good driving and there are many things on the car that could be improved. However I promised myself I'll not change a thing without consistently lapping in the 8:20s.

I don't like changing the shape of the pipe. I have seen them crack form too much massaging. And you may or may not get 1/4"
We have increased the clearance 1/2" (sometimes more) by removing the pipes and creasing the inner fender with a pipe and hammer where they touch. On restored cars, I have clearanced them with leather wrapped iron pipe with good results.
Nice thread, keep posting your adventures.

With the Spa F1 GP this weekend it's probably the right time for this post!

As most of you probably know Spa-Francorchamps(although in a different country, Belgium) is only 100 km away from the Nurburgring in Germany. With less than an hour separating the two most 'iconic' tracks in Europe it was only a matter of time before I attempted to do a couple of laps there with my 911.

What made me take action was seeing some of the coolest historic racing 911s in RSRSpa's July TD all together sharing a couple of pitboxes and lapping casually in the TD one day before their race. I'll share a couple of quick snaps since work duties kept me away from properly capturing them in detail.

And just a snap of one of the first 991 GT3 RS we've had on track next to the 'normal' GT3...

So after watching all the jaw-dropping machinery above I promised myself next time I'll be at Spa I'll bring my humble old 911 together with me and try to do a couple of laps, at least to get a feel of how the car is at Spa.

Come first week of August and the opportunity arises. In an RSRSpa Premium day that the track was shared by the likes of McLaren P1, a 918 and a LaFerrari(together with an eclectic selection of new and old racecars and track toys) I managed to sneak in towards the end of the day and get some laps done.

What an amazing track! Summer weather(high temps) and a very very long day of work meant that I'd actually had to take it easy. The car for sure isn't well setup for the fast flowing modern track and the power -that in the Nordschleife felt more than enough- was certainly lacking in the fast, flowing Spa. Still...so much fun!

On the positive side the car hold together(really getting shocked how well the 40+ year old 911 tackles every single challenge I throw at it with almost zero preparation). And the gearing -out of sheer luck- feels perfect for Spa. I think the car has another 3-4 easy seconds into it...and maybe a couple more difficult ones. Not really sure how to compare with the rest of classic 911s handling since most cars are on historic or modern slicks and that makes for a completely different car to my R888 shod SC.

So first taste of Spa was awesome but I left with a strong feeling of wanting more. I think I'll be back sooner than later...
