G50 leaking! Which boot, cap, or seal?

My 88 Carrera with a G50 is leaking gear oil onto my carpet. Have any of you guys encountered this? HELP!

There are a variety of seals, plugs, and seams in a transmission. You have to narrow down where it is leaking from before you can get any meaningful advise that isn't just idle speculation..

You're talking engine oil, not gear oil, right?
Could be oil return tubes or see this: Pelican Parts Technical BBS - Search Results

Start searching the forum & you'll find the likely culprits.

+1

And unless your garage is carpeted, I don't think that is gear oil you're looking at.
Brake/clutch fluid is the only think that I can think of that would leak onto your interior carpet.

I thought he was talking about a carpeted garage floor.
If it's car interior, I wouldn't know. Smell it; brake fluid perhaps? Look at the reservoir level.

I'll take a stab.....

The shifter shaft seal is leaking at the nosecone of the transmission and the rubber boot around the shaft that attaches to the chassis at the rear of the tunnel is collecting the oil until the lower part of the boot is filled and then the oil runs into the tunnel and out the tunnel only to be wicked up by the carpets.

Which is precisely why when we replaced that boot on my SC with the 915 gearbox we put a small hole in the bottom of that rubber boot. Just in case.

I believe my problem is similar to your old one, SCaddadle. We poked a hole in one of the seals so as not to collect oil. That fixed the problem for a little while, but the problem has returned. This time I want to fix it at the source. I tried browsing through Pelican's transmission section but the only things I found there were a rectangular plug and an O-ring.

Can anyone here provide a G50 schematic with part numbers (or at least clear images) for the seals? The plan is to replace all the suspect rubbers, but I still gotta have the right part names or numbers.

Guys, it really is gear oil.

TIA!

I didn't have that problem, however my friend the 356-912-early 911 Restorer had seen it enough to cut it off at the pass when we replaced mine when we had the engine/tranny out. That shaft needs to be squeaky clean with no rust or nicks in it for the seal to work. Good Luck!

Is this the suspect part, guys?

Porsche 911 (1974-1989) - Shift Linkage - Page 6

It's the seal that when viewed from the side, looks like a top hat.
