Holy smokes, what a fright! (literally)
Drove my '86 Targa from Seattle to Hood River (250 miles) for a family meet-up. On the way back, about to cross the Columbia River, a horrendous shrieking noise from the engine area, with billowing clouds of white smoke. Immediately imagine a $10k John Walker engine rebuild invoice. Quickly pull over, cross myself, and open the engine lid ... it was the AC compressor belt, melted and severed! Boy were we lucky. The refrigerant had been previously drained, awaiting installation of my Griffiths AC upgrade system sitting in my basement, which I procrastinated installing all winter. I had the evaporator fan on for air circulation, which engages the clutch for the compressor. Without coolant fluid, it was unhappy and seized. So, no loss since part of the kit is a new compressor.

The weather has been perfect for driving our Porsches. I'm glad to hear it was a minor issue. I'm not sure hope John feels about it. Ha!

Yup, disconnect the compressor clutch wire if you're going to run that fan with no charge in the system. Lucky the compressor belt didn't take out the alternator belt.

I thought imagining a 10k John Walker engine rebuild was something we aspired to?

So there is no pressure switch? If not, get one. Because reality.

Yep, I think we'd all line up outside John's door cash in hand for that price, I know I would, and I don't need a rebuild!

When it is time for the AC upgrade replace the rear condenser because it likely has shrapnel in it from that compressor. The hoses and the rest get upgrades anyway.
