I'm ready to install a new ball cup bushing, shift rod bushing and coupler. After reading some articles I'm a little confused.
Do I place the car into first gear or in neutral? Thanks! ![]() Kees. 911 Carrera coupé 1985 |

I've always started this process with it in neutral. Not really sure if it matters much, really. Adjusting the coupler after the work should always start in neutral, though.

For the shift rod and cup bushings it makes no difference as far as I can tell. But the shift coupler it can. Are you replacing the coupler with a new one or just replacing bushings and reinstalling? If you're refreshing the old you can just put index marks on the coupler and input shaft and then remove. Others might chime in but that's how I did it and it worked for me.

I would also replace the gear box mounts to insure everything is lined up correctly. +1 Neutral. You do not know if PO tampered with it.

I did those when I first bought my car, found even more improvement after installing the Seine System shifter kit.
Bang for the buck the best thing I ever did to the car.

I started in first when doing the coupler, but honestly, by the time I got everything hooked up, I had moved it around quite a bit. Basically, I connected the coupler, then went through the gears with it parked, adjusted the coupler, then drove it around the block and made a few more adjustments.
