'79 SC bumper change?

I need some ideas on new bumpers to go to on my SC. Any ideas out there to drop weight and get better aerodynamics. I have the factory spoiler on the front but no rear wing (which I want to add in some form when I do the bumpers. I am thinking "yellow bird" but need an education. Car, wife and dog all in one setting

Thanks!

You could try Rennspeed Motorsports or GT Racing. They make fiberglass bumpers. You might also be able to delete the bumper shock tubes for added weight reduction. Check out the GT Racing site and here are some pics of some FG bumpers from Rennspeed Motorsports. These are for turbo flared cars but they make similar bumpers for narrow body cars.

'thinking "yellow bird"
You certainly don't want to do a color change; you would then have to find a new matching wife and dog.

My "Yellowbird" bumpers came from BW Motorsports very good quality parts, perfect fit!

Bill V--what kind of weight savings did the front/rear bumpers provide? Did you have to make your own outlets for the exhaust or are they pre-formed? How difficult was the installation? How did you handle the paintwork? Thanks--I'm going to be going through the same process soon also.

Bill's car is always classic to look at

Once I get creative and spendy I plan on a similar conversion.

Granted I would rather not have the fog light holes, hopefully I can special order it w/o the holes. With H1s I have all the light in the world and then some.

RX-7 oil cooler up front with some homemade screen for protection.

In the rear once the smog laws on my car expire I will custom make a dynomax type thing to go straight out from where the cat currently resides. And cut a hole where ever the pipe comes out straight... No SSI conversion for me as I hate to fix what is not broken. The cost difference for like 5 HP (est SSI versus dynomax difference) is too high. Also some owners report that torque goes in the toilet with the SSIs, but that is very subjective.

All the 911 "hotdog" mufflers are heavy, in all forms. And I want to lighten the rear more than the front.

Take Care,

hi rdane here's my 79SC with a 964 bodykit......you need to know the pitfalls of fitting though it is not as straight forward as some people would have you believe.....Bill's car looks fantastic too....but with the 964 kit you get side sills too and they are very neat..people drool over my car now........the handling is better then ever especially on the khumo tyres......i'm planning on upgrading the tie rods and fitting early heat exchangers.twin outlet exhaust soon......keep us posted ....good luck and do loads of research

I did the YB conversion to my 78SC Targa that looks almost like Bill's, but in black. I fabed some ducts for the fender oil cooler and for the brakes where the driving light opening are, and I purchased some industry rubber stripping for <$20 for the front rubber spoiler (thanks for the link Thom). This weekend I am tweeking a rear deck lid grill to fit in the front opening. I gained a little more weight saving than Bill because mine replaced the entire bumper assemble, about 150 lbs.

I picked up a F/G hood and YB front bumper cap from MA Shaw. The quality of the product is excellent and the fit was bolt on. For the rear I used GT racing IROC bumper cap. A nice product but it took a bit of fabing to get it to line up corretly.

I reflect a year or so and like the sill delete setup as the "Tale of Two SCs" in the issue of Excellence... Kind of looks racy in my opinion.

Granted the 964 sills are very clean looking... And clean is great as well. One of the reasons I like the YB kit, because the lines are cleaner than stock. The IROC front spoiler is "busy" which makes it less appealing to me.

This is one of those areas where personal preference plays a huge role. No right or wrong answers... Unless you rice it up with bling bling cr@p which you will be repremanded for

JonT, weight savings is about 30# front 25# rear, doesn't sound like much but it is noticable by its absence, because it is all from the extremities of the car. outlets are custom made for the pipes, not a big deal, paint is paint Glassurit by my bodyman of the past 20 yrs, attachment is easy just a few vertical bolts into the fender flanges. and a few horizontal bolts into the vertical inner panels.

fog holes are very useful for brke cooling ducts

I like the stock sills and try never to add weight that isn't useful for something else. Next body mod will be a carbon fiber tail.

The brakes are Brembo 964 on 930 rotors w/ 23mm ATE/MB m/c they work nicely.

If you loose the dog and the wife that would be about 160 lbs.
Just kidding

hi Paul i've modified my '79 911SC and fitted a 964 bodykit......the bumpers have no metal in them and are very light .......i've also ditched the low impact suspension units.....is the weight saving really as much as 150lbs?......i'm going to fit an early set of heat exchangers and a twin outlet exhaust.....initially my first choice was to fit stainless stell but this will be heavier than mild steel .......do you have any idea of the difference in weight of these systems....am I being to paranoid about weight .....it's certainly a cheap way of getting more performance
