Transmission question, which one to use

Hello,
I am working on restoring a 1965 911, and I have 2 tranny's and need to decide which one to use.

I searched on Pelican and got some information, but still need some help.

One is from a 912, 902/02 it was more or less what was in the car when I bought it, it was actually next to it but is was working before it was pulled out.

So I know it will work, I have new half shafts that came with the car, that should work on it, I will double check, these are the newer half shafts to not the original 1965 ones.

The other is a 911/01, 1970..

I have both the old clutches that came with them, they are both more or less shot, the 911/01, I got from someone that was upgrading there entire drive train, so it might be a little ragged, it also had a leaky rear main seal so oil got onto the clutch..

The 902/02 will need the flywhell resurfaced, ( so woll the other one) the disc is not to bad.

Big question is which one to use, it will have a 2.2 in it more or less stock, from a 1970 e, then one day I will rebuild a nicer 2.2, not anything wild, if I do that I will hopefully get another one and keep this one.

I know that the 911/01 has a stronger case, also the cluch kit is considerably less for the 902/02.

Is there a good way to check for condition of them?

you probably have a 911/01 if it's a 70. the early trans would have a more fun set of gears than the 70. also a weaker R+P/differential. you could use the 70 case and R+P, and the 2,3,4th early gears and the 5th out of the 70 for freeway speeds. then you would have the better clutch assembly.
there's no way short of complete disassembly to tell if a trans is any good, other than driving it.

Yes you are correct it is a 911/01, I missed typed it several times... ooppsss!!!

I also corrected it in the first message.

Thanks for the advice, the car will be used mostly around town and on weekend drives in the country, so I'm not that concerned about high way speeds and gas milage, Fun is more important.

I was leaning toward the 902/02..

cool you have 2 trans..... I recommend you go throught the gears you have and build yourself a nice gearbox with short gears....... MSX or better KQV.....im sure you have the gears already...... at the worst have to purchase just one gear

Thanks for the reply Tim.

I would rather just toss one in for now so I can get the car back on the road, then in the future I can look into changing the gears around.

John, So is the 1970 clutch a better one to go with? I would assuem it is lighter too, and more $$.

the 70 clutch can't be used with the 65 trans. it is beefier and weighs more than the early one, in spite of being aluminum.

John,
Yes, I know that, 1970 push, older pull, the 1970 one needs a new pivit? part to and maybe a new fork.

So basically the 1970 is stronger, and the older one has funer gears...

I will take a long look at them both and decide which one seams to be in better shape ( don't ask me how, don't know yet, proabaly turn each one and make sure they both go into every gear and see if it is smooth and check the condiditon of the gear oil ) and also see how much each one will be to install then decide.
