Targa Bar Seal Rivets
I am replacing my seal between the targa top and the targa bar. There are four plastic rivets that I need to install. I have destroyed 3 of them trying to get the first one in. Except for cosmetics, is there any reason I should not use the generic nylon ones I can get at my FLAPS as opposed to the ones I get from Porsche?

Picture of the flaps one side by side with the Porsche one would be helpful.
If the same, I can't see why not. I somehow managed to get mine in without destroying them. I can't remember what I used though... Some conveniently sized punch in my tool box. ![]() Last edited by timmy2; 02-24-2015 at 09:31 AM.. |

Belmetric.com has plastic and aluminum rivets if you need some.

I did this last weekend. Create a tool using a piece of threaded rod and doubled-up nuts at the proper depth. I cracked off an old screwdriver handle and put it on the back of my makeshift threaded rod tool so I could push. The linked post above is pretty good, but I pushed instead of turned. Either would probably work.
The rod needs to go the depth of the rivet, with the nut hitting the top so it doesn't bottom out too much. It will bottom out a little -- this is good as it holds the rivet on -- then you can back the threads out when you're all the way in. I found out the hard way that the busted-up ends of my old rivets were still down in there. I was not able to get all of them out, got some partially out using hemostat and pick etc. If old rivets are in there you won't get new ones in. Finally make sure you put the little caps on once you've installed them, or they will whistle in the wind. Ask me how I know. Someone is making an escutcheon that covers both the rivets and the center pin receptacle - I thought that looked pretty cool and I may get some when I replace my seal.
