Will Muffler change affect Smog (Calif) ?

Anyone know if a muffler change alone will alter the smog certification in Calif?
Considering changing from stock to Fleumeister muffler on my 3.2 Carrera. No other mods planned. eg no ssi, no cat-bypass.

Anyone in Calif, or LA area with this setup?

Thanks
Mike

Well, based on my own personal (bad) experience, if the officer thinks (any part of) your exhaust system is not "original" from the factory he can write you a fix-it ticket.

I know. It happened to me.

John,

I went to your car gallery to see what your exhaust looks like. Car looks really nice, esp with the 3.2.

One question thought, are you using a Cool Collar? How effective is it?

I can't cite the specific ordinance, but so-called "cat-back" exhaust system mods are okay as long as they don't exceed maximum sound level specs. All the emission controls end at the catalytic converter.

Otherwise, I don't think you'd see so many stainless steel coffee-can exhaust systems on Hondas, Toyotas and Mitsus; all legal and a big dollars for cat-back exh. manufacturers.

Yeah Neil, I got a cool collar.........

You can just see it in the edge of the engine pic...which I'm sure you noticed.

I don't know if it does anything...maybe helps radiate a little more heat than the plain black oil filter does alone...

But it can't hurt anything either, so there it lives.

cheers

John,

I was just kidding about the cool collar. I have seen such raging debates about it on this and other forums, that I wanted to kid you about it.

I'd consider adding it to my car, but there are so many other things that need attention on my car, that it is pretty far down the list. Your car on the other hand looks perfect. I am jealous.

No sweat at all Neil. I was happy to throw my .02 out there.
Actually the cool collar can realistically only be a "small part of a bigger system"

It only cost $35.00 so if it only lowers the ambient oil temp one degree by it's presence Im still happy, and if nothing else it provides an additional source of heat dissapation.

What the heck.

Btw, Thx very much for yr nice words re my 911

At least in CA...there is no dbA limit on mufflers.

It is at the discretion of the officer. According to the regs, any exhaust modified to increase sound can be cited as "modified"......it is VERY subjective and very rarely enforced, fortunately.

Just listen to the uncapped Harleys.....

mikez, You are absolutely correct. I was followed approx 5 miles last march by a "county sherriff" who waited until I was inside his juristiction (unincorporated city) which was stupid of me to drive into.....as I could have turned and avoided doing so. But he cited me for a "modified exhaust" saying my exhaust was too loud....

Subjective to say the least.......I never let it get above 3k on the tach while he was tailing me 'cos I know above 4k it really gets on the pipe.

So while I'm pulled over a pack of those straight piped Harleys lumbers past.........louder than $h*t....

He never even looked up at them......

So much for blind justice....

The answer is still no. A muffler change will not alter the smog certification in California - the smog station won't give a whit about what kind of muffler you have.
