1969S > 1970E part out? help

OK guys here is the story, im at a loss, ive wanted a 911 ever since i understood the concept of driving. Last summer i was fortunate enough to come across a solid 70E with webbers in Boston, i drove up with a car transporter and got the car. I brought the car home to Chapel Hill (i go to UNC) and started to prepare for the restoration, the front suspension is off and the interior is mostly out. About 2 weeks ago a came across a 69S on ebay with all matching numbers in original condition with some rust problems and bid 5k on it not expecting to win...... i won and now have 2 911s.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1865655482&rd=1

I have the car listed for sale for 8k but in all honesty dont want to get rid of it. I know that if im gonna do a complete restoration a 69S is better than a 70E. The options ive come up with are a follows. Bare in mind the 5k i droped into the was earmarked for the 70E restoration. Here are the options i am considering.

1.selling the S for the 8k if i can get it
2. parting out the S and using the enging in my E
3. parting out the E and using the E as as parts car for the S
4. selling the E as is for 5k

bare in mind the body on the E is in better shape than the S

thanks for the help................................ Geoff

Did you pick up the S yet? The part that scared me in that ad was the 'good for parts or a donor car' thing. Is the rust really that bad? Back to your question: what do you want to end up with? A $40k+ concours restoration or just a nice early car to have fun with? -- Curt

It hurts me to see any early 911 get parted unless the chassis is seriously damaged beyond any reasonable repair.

If that's not the case, pick the car you want, and sell the other whole.

I went to see the cars this weekend. Hopefully Geoff doesn't mind my posting here-

The 70E is a real nice car. Needs some localized rust repair- a couple of floor patches, perhaps cowl repair though I don't think so, new nose, fender repairs, new front pan. That's about it- an amateur welder (such as those who have posted here on Pelican) could accomplish these jobs with minimal expense other than cost of parts and equipment.

The 69S is quite a different story. It has undergone deep and penetrating rot. All areas of the longitudinal/box section structure are compromised. To just begin restoration of this car, the body must be dipped and jigged. There's no way around professional restoration on this one- there's just too much extensive damage for an amateur to consider approaching without a jig and some serious fabrication facilities (all 3 layers of the main longitudinals are completely *****ed). The rot penetrates through the dash/bulkhead area, which would require astronomical cost to repair correctly. It would need to go to a top caliber shop such as G&W, Klasse 356, etc, who probaby wouldn't talk to anyone without a $20k deposit. I've been traveling around this neck of the woods inspecting tubs for about 3 years now, and this is by far the worst I've seen.

That said- there's a fanatic out there somewhere with the resources to repair the car. I believe that, assuming it is a numbers match (which has not yet been determined), it deserves to be preserved. Most of us will agree that outside of a '73RS limited production series, the '69S is the most special regular production car from the pre-74 series. The number of surviving examples decreases every year.

My advice would be to sell the S to someone who'll restore it, and concentrate on that E.

Another note- from pure pragmatic standpoint- that 69S motor is honestly probably not as much fun to drive as the 70E motor. The latter has a touch more displacement and broader power band, while the S is peaky as hell. If both were available to me, rebuilt and same price, I'd take the E.

I didn't even get my camera out of the car this weekend- sorry. Or I'd post pics.

the Rust on the S is a serrious problem, if its as extensive as dtw says how much is the repair work gonna cost, the engine in the S is reported to be in good running condition so if thats true i figure im that far ahead of the game. does anyone know a shop in the greater north carolina area with a good reputation and is able to complete a job of this magnitude.

Heheheh, he doubts me because I know he'll buy it. Are you a business major? Good stuff.

How long has that car been sitting? That engine was covered with moss. I'd tear the engine down to the bearings just because it is an unknown, is incredibly weathered and filthy, and because it would be a shame to have a nice restored car with a mossy engine.

Alright Geoff- I'm gonna let these other guys have at it now- I bet you're tired of all my doom and gloom. Good to meet you this weekend.

EDIT: G&W Motorworks is a multiple Manhattan-award winning restoration outfit, and is located just a few hours away in VA. 540.942.5285

EDIT 2: above 1st sentence should be "because HE knows I'LL buy it (the car).

Geoff,

First off i should go on record saying DUMP THE S! Immediately, if not sooner. The E looks like a damn nice car and is probably worth the effort. Unless this is S numero uno then it is not worth it.

On the other hand, you can call Randall Yow at Foreign Coach Works here in Greensboro. He painted my car and Racemor's car too. I will say without going into too much detail that my paint job with minimal rust was VERY expensive. It can get away from you in a hurry. Randall will say that he'll do it if you want, but you should dump the car.

Also, if you won the bidding at $5000 why do you think it will go up to $8000 this time? If you do get interested in Randalls work i'd be happy to show you my car, Tom might even drive up from Charlotte to show off the stealth mobile.

Paul
