When I did mine, I simply sued a wax/grease remover ( sold at auto parts stores and carefully wiped all the nooks and crannies. It dries almost immediately. Taping off the wheels was the hardest part, but a thin automotive pinstriping tape bends nicely and then I followed with a wider tape. They came out perfect. Good luck - fun project with an awesome finish.

Most will follow with a scotch scrubby pad to lightly etch the surfaces.

No expert here but you'll just want to make sure you have a solid, non "mirror" finish so the primer will adhere well. Scotchbrite would do a good job.

You should consider powder coating in mat or satin finish or you will be re-painting frequently to keep it looking good.

If you want the polished petals with a black background, there was a fellow that taped over the holes (from the backside of the wheel) between the spokes and then simply poured the paint into the wheel. Gravity would then serve to evenly set the depth of the painted center, and then poking a hole through the tape would allow the paint to empty out. No careful taping and probably close to the original dipping method when the wheels were first finished. Obviously, won't apply if you want black spokes.

I'd probably use lacquer thinner to clean them, then use a scotch pad to scuff them, then clean again. I'd use a self etching primer then spray with a durable enamel. If you are going to use a spray gun you can pick your poison just make sure whatever you spray over the self etching primer is compatible with the primer itself or you could lift it when you spray the top coat.

Well, suing them is one way!
![]() I can't provide much advice other than if you repaint them, consider masking the lug holes so they are bare like the factory. Reason is paint can be slippery. |
