My uncle said back in the 30s they used to hook a coil to the car somehow where they could pull up with the bumper touching another car and when someone grabbed the handle of the other car they would get zapped.
God bless urethane bumpers!

The "old trick" went like this:
1) Source yourself an old condenser....the kind that fits on the side of a distributor and works as part of an ignition system. 2) Remove spark plug lead from an engine. 3) Place "pigtail" lead of condenser into the disconnected spark plug lead and place the body of the condenser to electrical ground. 4) Start engine for a just a few seconds, then shut off. 5) CAREFULLY remove the condenser pigtail from the spark plug lead. Whatever you do, DO NOT hold the body of the condenser in your hand and grab the end of the pigtail lead......that is for your buddy to do when you hand it to him and say "hey, you know what this is? ![]() ![]() |

Back in HS and first years of college in the 70's I worked in auto parts. Bap/Geon in NY. We used to charge up.a
condenser (forgot how) and leave it on the customer side of the counter. Inevitably while someone was waiting for us to look up a part (believe it or not in a book) they would start fiddling with the condensor and get a wicked shock. Harmless, but fun.

When I was in college I was close to the surplus property sales at Ft. Riley, KS. I bought a sniper scope power supply there and hooked it up in my Corvair Corsa. One lead to the body, the other to a chain that dragged the ground, for the ground. I could turn this on when people leaned against the car, sometimes with great results, sometimes not depending on the weather, their shoes, etc. Best reaction I ever had was a chick at a sorority car wash. 'Bout tore a wiper arm off the car though!

i have not laughed that hard in a long time. it made me cry.
its realy nothing more than an elctric fence charger. i was going to do the same thing with an old CD unit and coil for our fence. the small fence charger i have is just a coil that is on all the time. the big fence chargers are pulsed like what he did.

The nails on top for the spark gap were a nice touch.
Glad my kids are out of the house or they might have killed each other with one of these. |
