Purolator vs Mahle

I changed my oil yesterday and when I went to put on the new Purolator filter I bought ( sorry not from our host/mistake!) it did not look any where as well made as the Mahle I took off. It did not have the internal springs and was a lot lighter than the Mahle.

So two questions.

1 Has anyone run the Purolator (it's just white with no writing on it.)

2 I think I really want to get a better Mahle and put it on so....can I remove the Purolator while the system is full of oil and put a new filter on? Is the filter location under gravity pressure while full and if I remove the filter will I drain quarts of oil into my engine compartment. I would really rather not have to drain brand new $$$ oil out to just change the filter.

Thanks
Steve

just put a rag under filter tucked in. There was a great thread about oil filters awhile ago.

Purolator used to make filters for Porsche. I would go with a Mahle over a genuine Porsche filter (lowest bidder).

The old red Purolator PC-260 was made by Mahle and was a good filter for a 911, the new white version is not, I would buy the correct Mahle OC-54

Check what the Purolator cross references to....if there is anything NOT Porsche the shortcomings aren't worth it. The more specifc an aftermarket filter is to one model or year etc...the less compromises there are.

Someone above said to just use a rag. I don't think it's a problem since the filter is at the top of the oil tank.

I'm surprised the Purolator is not a quality filter. In the past I've put Purolators on my VW and my 914 and they filters had the spring loaded bypass valve just like the German filters and appeared to be a high quality part.

Yes you can. As someone said simply put a rag under it as it will drip a little.

Depending upon how long you drive on the oil the Purolator filter should be OK. 3000 miles? No Problem. Over that didtsnce the differences between your Purolator and a Mahle will be insignificant.

I just bought a Purolator oil filter for my 87. It has a clearly visible spring-loaded high pressure bypass inside, so it seemed OK. It is less expensive and more available locally for me, although I will buy a Mahle filter from our host for my next oil change and compare the two.

You have the cheapest filter they make. The Purolator Premium Plus is the next one up, and their best is the Purolator Pure One. Get yourself the latter, then compare.

Step away from the Frams.

If you are within driving distance of El Segundo you can get the Mahle from our host at Will Call. Save yourself the $5 shipping or so. Will Call hours are M-F 9a-4p but you have to phone in your order ahead of time.

(I also have a ton of spares in the off chance that you are near South Bay.)

Thanks.
I've been to Pelican so many times I could probably send the car by itself. There are just almost down the road from me.

Whenever Bosch, or any other oil filter, comes up all the posts seem to be "Use a Mahle filter." Here's the only other post I could find:

Bosch oil filters...What do you think about them?

You guys should take a look at a Wix filter. It is a very high quality filter.
