Need advice pls - replacing stereo in 89 911 3.2L Targa with 'enhanced' factory sys.

Hi all,

I have removed the CD-2 original unit without apparent incident or damage to self or my Black Beauty. HOWEVER - I have now found to my dismay, a 6-pin white connector, a long pin connector which I believe to be the antenna, and an 8-pin DIN style connector for a "preamp" which I assume then feeds amplified sound to the speakers via the preamp thingie below the passenger seat.

How in the world am I going to wire this car up to an aftermarket head unit? The sticker on the top of the CD-2 unit is of no guidance at least as to the speaker wires which are I suspect imbedded in the 8-pin DIN. It tells me what the white connector wires are, but that's it. Will I have to rewire this entire car? I had to do this on a 1990 Nissan Maxima once because of the weirdo Bose system it had in there, and it was a pain in the tuckus. But at least the Maxima gave me space to work with, the 911 has half the space.

And from you purists out there - I sure don't like the idea of cutting wires etc. on my Black Beauty just to put a silly radio in; would you just get the original head unit repaired? Any idea who does that in the Atlanta GA area?

Crutchfield and probably many other car stereo shops sell kits to adapt aftermarket stereos to the stock wiring.

You will not find any adapter for that yr car to wire an aftermarket radio to it. It is not that hard. Obviously your powers, ground and power antenna lead are in the white plug. The system is amplified. In that harness, which is called a din cable are your signal leads to the amp and the amp turn on wire.
I have not installed one in a while so I don't remember schematics of that din cable but a qualified high end audio shop would be able to figure that out in 5 min.
By the way your 90 maxima is a piece of cake to install a radio with a bose system. Like RyanG said thay make a harness that is about $15.00 and it turns the bose amp on so you can use it.
Your not driving a $5.00 car go to a professional and get the right job done.
I own a high end audio shop in NY and I would install that radio for less than $100.00. I am sure in your area in would be similiar... John

Go to swstereo.com for contact info and speak to the owner Stephan. He can make you a custom adapter harness so not wires need to be cut. He can also assist in discussing options to replace the amp and not disturb wiring. He worked with me and I put a new Blaupunkt Toronto head unit, Punch amp and new speakers in my 89 without cutting original wiring or replacing speaker covers. I of course saved the original radio and amp so the car could be brought back to original some day.

That surprises me that companies like Scosche aren't already making an adapter harness. I ordered one from Crutchfield years ago that made installing a Blaupunkt aftermarket stereo in the '87 944 I used to own really easy.

Way to go. I did not know there was a company that makes the harness.

Schosche will not have harnesses for older Porsches anymore. There is not enough demand to make those anymore.
