I am doing a little research on what my options are for putting a 5-6 speed sequential tranny in the Beast. I want to see if anyone here has any ideas/input. I don't think I'm ever going to be happy with the 915 and its only a matter of time until I break it.
So far I have found a place www.phii.net that has a fully pnumatic (?) sequential based on a 993 tranny. It is electronically controled via switches on the sterring wheel and you don't even use the clutch, a la F1. Mark, I was watching the Porsche Cup race (Australian Titles) here on Sunday. One of the guest commentators was commenting on how they were debuting their new Hollinger Sequential box. I'm fairly sure I heard it right 'cause the whole sequential thing raised my interest.
The Hollinger gearboxes are quite famous over here because they are made in Melbourne, and most of our V8 Supercars (Australian parity race series...Ford vs GMH) run them (but not in sequential format). Hewland makes some pretty nice sequental transmissions and I think one would work? There are some that have been put in several historic 914s and it really helps them.

Lots of people are getting into the sequential gearbox business. Gemini Transmissions in the U.K. builds a gearbox for the 911 GT3R that is sequential. They make gears for F1 and CART and they do know what they are doing. None of this is cheap, the box is around 20K. The gears are straight cut so you'd have a bit more noise but it would work. Lighter weight too.

I have already checked most of them out, excluding Gemini and Hollinger which I can't find anywhere. The Quaife looks like a nice unit but costs @ 18k b4 shipping, etc. I know they are all going to be made out of unobtainium. The unit from PHII is a little under 10k and is fully electronically controlled which is pretty cool.
Has anyone heard of or tried putting a later style tiptronic in an earlier car? Or a later style 6 speed? ------------------ Mark The Beast mark@hargett.com |
