replacing hard brake lines on 81 SC

Hi,
I am trying to replace the flex lines for the front and I discovered that the right hard brake line's nut is kinda rounded already probably from the previous owner's for not using a flare wrench. This is the line that goes from the front coupler to the flex line on the passenger side. I would like to replace this hard line but it looks like our host no longer carries it. Would you know where I could get a replacement for this other than at the dealers? Is it difficult to replace it? do I need to remove any major component just to replace it? Appreciate your advice. In the mean time, I would continue to google for more info.

Most auto parts stores have generic hard lines in various lengths with different fittings. The line is easy to remove, so you could take it with you to ensure you get the right fittings in an appropriate length.

Depending on the hard line, it may we be possible to trim the bubble flare off the end of the line, slide the flare nut off, a new one on, and remake the flare. Judging from your questions, this is probably a task best left to an experienced tech: the consequences of doing it wrong are not pleasant. And you probably won't want to invest in a decent flaring tool.

As mreid says, you can indeed purchase line stock and flare nuts to make up a new line. Federal Hill sells quality parts and tools: Fedhill brake line - Where to buy brake line, fuel line, brake line flaring tools, brake line nuts and brake line fittings. You'll need a flaring tool, tube cutter and deburrer, and a line bending mandrel. I like my Snap-on flaring tool set, as another reference.

You need a double flare. Snap on sells a small kit containing everything you need. I don't know if the flaps lines are double flare.

I purchased my fronts from Napa, had to make a jig from couple of screen door rollers and made an S shape to fit the space properly. I opted for these because they had a protective coating to keep from rusting. 6+ years later still good

I need to do the backs soon, one has rounded out after replacing the flex line.

PMB Performance used to carry the front and rear hard lines but I didn't see them on their website last time I looked. You might call or e-mail them to see if they are still available. I replaced all the front hard lines on the '74 and they were perfect fits.
