Changing my Seat Skin

Project for the week is to replace the seat skin on the passenger seat (30 year old leather on my Targa). I have the seat out and I have the new seat skin kit.

Question 1) I assume that I need to remove the seat back from the seat base. There are 2 retaining rings at each end of a rod which looks like it goes the width of the seat (at the base of the seat back). Do I need to take that rod out (and those retaining rings) to remove the back from the base? There are two large bolts on each side which I have already removed.

Question 2) Do I need to remove all of the gear from the bottom of the seat base? This would be the 2 tracks, electrics, base frame, etc.

Any help would be appreciated....thanks, John

Draco, I have another question. Do I need to remove these two small shafts (one on each side). They appear to be the main hinge holding the seat back to the seat base. However in the photo series that you posted, the hinge remains with the base.
If I do need to remove them, do you know if I push them into the hinge or pull them out. I can't seem to pull them out and can't find a bolt on the back side.
A screwdriver points to the shaft in the photo.

No, you do not tamper with the hinge.

Once retaining bolts/screw are removed and the pull cable. the upper seat will pull away from the mounts. Time and debris may have sealed it together but it will pry apart.

Just don't forget to mark the cable before removing it so it can be align properly.

You can always PM me for detailed questions.

Jim

That looks like an 8-way seat. A bit different than the 4-way or manual seats. Yes, you will need to remove the retaining clip. The rod is spring loaded. You need to push in on the rod til it clears the hinge so you can remove the backrest, you'll need to do that on both sides of the seat IIRC. You also need to unplug the power cord under the seat which goes to the backrest. Take note of the washers that come off so you can put them back in the same place.

Hi Marko. Thanks for the info. When you say an 8-way seat, I assume that you mean the number of directions the seat can move with the automated system? Here is a photo of the control panel. Is this the 8-way version? The car is an 85 Targa and I believe that the seats are original.
Thanks.

Yes, the "ways" are number of directions. I assumed they were 8-ways as you have the backrest motorized tilt hinge. I haven't seen very many 6-ways. Those are 6-ways, just count the arrows. Backrest front/back tilt and bottom front/rear up/down height. 8-ways have the added fore/aft motorized movement of the whole seat.

Yes, I just did this yesterday. In addition to pushing these rods in I had to use a crowbar to pry and make enough room for the rods to clear the hinges.

One more thing, you should put the bottoms back in the car and raise the front and back all the way up. It will be very hard to remove and install the covers with them in the down position.
Also be careful when bending the metal tabs that are along the bottom of the seat. You don't want to break them. The two in front are a little fragile. Bend them slowly.
Don't forget to show us some pics when yer done.

Hi Guys, one last question. I have installed the new skins (bottom and back) but when I attached the back to the bottom the back of the seat leans back way too far. And it does not lean far enough forward. By comparing it to the other seat, I see a metal, circular stopper which acts to limit the distance that the seat will lean back. However, my 2 stoppers (one on each side) seem to be loose and rotate instead of staying in place. I will take a couple of photos and attach them. Any idea on how to adjust and lock in the position of these stoppers? John
