Turbo Smokes at idle, HELP!
We have a 3 liter turbo with a rayjay turbocharger installed. The motor was bought on ebay, and the seller wasn't honest. When the car idles, it will start smoking after a minute or so. When you drive the car it doesn't smoke at all and runs like a bat out for hell. We thought the turbo was installed too low and not draining back into the engine or the turbo was bad. had the turbo looked at, it was fine and we had it rebuilt anyway since it was off the car. Someone suggested installing a small electric pump to pump the oil out at idle, so we just finished doing that and the &*^% thing still smokes at idle. The turbo is mounted to the engine so the drain is at about a 30 degree angle. Could this be the problem? Once again, when you drive the car it doesn't smoke at all. None. how many miles on the engine? original kkk 3dlz turbo has huge oil flow, so it
s probably something else smoking (now that you have freshly rebuilt turbo). i suggest checking for worn valve guides.

turbo smoke at idle
Thanks for your help. We took the turbo off, and plumbed everything, and the car ran perfect. No smoke at all with the turbo off. The motor only has 15K miles on it, and has good compression all around. Could it be the angle of the drain plug? It is set up at about 30 degrees up from straight down?

One way to try to eliminate if it is the drain. Disconnect the turbo drain and put a straight fitting on, then drain it into a can. If it doesn't smoke it's the drain.

phuuu...
if you took off turbo and it didn't smoke then it's probably turbo that is leaking :-( This thing with turbo installation-height and drain is somewhat of a black art. One of the guys i know quickly ruined both turbos in his twin-turbo installation by using non-adequate evacuation pump. Original installation has small "sump" underneath the turbo... This "small electric pump", how big capacity does it have? It might do more harm than good if it's too small to evacuate oil from turbo at full oil pressure.
