I am planning to rebuild the brake calipers on my 1980 SC using your caliper rebuild guide. However, the Pelican parts package that the tech article on your site takes me to, refers to piston seal and dust boots for 911 vehicles only up to 1974. Are these same parts suitable for a 1980 SC?

That should be the front... http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/PEL_search_2014.cgi?command=see_more&please_wait=N&db_record_number=41905&PART_SEARCH=Y&SUPERCAT_FLAG=Y&make=POR&description=91135299800%20 That should be the rear... One hint I have from experience, the brakes will feel unusually spongy after rebuilding the calipers. Just make sure you have all the air out of the system and then brake with confidence. - Casey |

Make sure you use Syl-glide lube for the assembly. Use brake fluid to insert the inner seal then lube to coat the inner part of the caliper where pistons ride and a lite coat of lube on the piston. Insure piston is not pitted, if so, you need to replace as a pair of four or this task is a complete waste of time.
Put a generous layer of lube on the under side of the dust cover and around the piston, this will keep further corrosion and insure an air tight seal. When putting the pads back in, do not push the pistons all the way in, make sure you push in just enough to slide the pads in with little to no effort. Just did mine and had to replace some pitted pistons ![]()

How did you squeeze the rear caliper's dust covers into place?

The trick is:
Remove the retaining barbed ring carefully. Take a flat faced plyer, I used my large needle nose plyer and squash down every other barb. Re-insert the ring making sure it is in it's proper place by comparing to the un-molested one. Repeat. This allows just enough tension to catch the piston lip and stay in place. As you never push the pistons out all the way by accident or intentionally it will stay. Centric also make a seal kit with the proper dust boot with retaining ring on the outside per PAG OEM design. But their inner seal is not proper. I am planning on replacing the boot with Centric because I have OCD. ![]()

Alright, now ya got me nervous. I installed Centric seals in my calipers a few months ago. I'm curious why the inner seals aren't proper?

Yeah, and what's a "pair of four"?

LOL, you are correct, I meant "Pair" of calipers so doing two calipers at the same time requires 4 pistons. Good Catch
