paranoid or real problems? Help.

Hello all.
Last Sunday I went for a long drive in my 75 911s and while driving near dividers or through tunnels I heard a slight metallic noise when I took the revs past 3.500. While idling I hear no strange noise at all. At first I didn't hear it quite well, but after a while I started to listen to it more and more and subsequently heard it more and more pronounced. It all was happening on the way home and I just took it easy until I finally got home. I must say that my car doesn't have any big oil leaks- just small drips around the valve covers - I am about to change the gaskets. . I checked the oil and unfortunately it shows between low and high - closer to low though. I know I should of checked the oil before I left home- since this car is driven only on the weekends- IF the weather is good. But I figured that it wasn't enough of the oil loss to cause damage... A friend of mine said that he heard the same noise on his SC many times over the years and it's nothing... What do you think? Am I paranoid or is it some kind of problem?

I think you are just letting your imagination get away from you. Even with the oil level on the dipstick close to the "low" mark there is still plenty of oil to maintain sufficient lubrication. After all, even on the low mark you still have over 8 quarts of oil circulating!

If this is a poll, my vote is you are being paraniod.

It could just be the noise of the cam chains which are naturally noisy.

A favorite mean trick of mine is going through a tunnel where the traffic on the other side of the road is stopped and is noisy anyway (for them) and I hit 6,000rpm in third gear. This is about 7:30am so it gives them a good wake-up call. Normal rev's going through this same tunnel I can hear if a valve is ticking and other minor noises. I think our cars just make more engine noises because the engine is not "baffled" by a large water cooled engine block.
