why is my ignition timing off?

its been a few years now. did a top end rebuild on my car. the car is a 1973 911e targa. with MFI. back last year I just couldn't get it to run right. seems like it was running to rich. so I sent it out to California for them to set it back to factory specs. I triple checked cam timing. everything is new in the ignition, including plugs wires cap and rotor plus ignition switch. last year I could get the car to idle and set timing at 5degrees atdc. now the car barely idles and if you rev it it will hang at around 2000 rpms for awhile. I did finally get it to idle this past weekend. put timing light on it and it was showing about 15-20 degrees btdc. I really don't know whats going on here.i think it might be the distributor.i get it lined up with the rotor and the notch on tdc on number 1 cylinder. I think I have my fuel problem solved, but now cant figure out the ignition timing? what else could it be???

did you send it to motormeister? sounds like the advance springs inside the dist are broken. with timing light on, rev the engine, if the timing mark does not move you have a problem with the advance. send it off and have it rebuilt.

Installing the distributor, you want the rotor approaching the mark, not on it or past it. There is 12 point gear on the bottom of the distributor so if you're on the wrong point you're automatically 30 degrees off and unable to get back to TDC.. Pull the dist and back up the rotor one notch. Bruce | ||
