Stalling while driving

I have a an '85 3.2L that had been running perfectly...Pulled the car out after sitting for about a month and while driving it seems to want to stall, tach drops to near zero then pops right back up. It did this about 10 times during a 20 mile ride.

Starts right up, idles well, no surge, seems to only happen between 3-5k rmp.

Could this be a faulty DME?
Bad coil?
Distributor cap?

Sounds like a massive vacuum leak.

Idles well? after she is warm a bit, pull over, leave the car on and remove oil the cap, idle should drop, if not, you may have a vacuum leak.

Does this only happen once the car is warmed up? My vintage coil would get heat soaked and do the same thing. Only has issues on hot days over 85 degrees.

started after the car got to temp

Just to be clear it never actually fully stalled
Just drops and goes right back, all while at highway speeds

Are you saying the engine keeps turning at approximately the same speed while the tachometer and power cuts out?

This would point either towards the flywheel speed sensor becoming intermittent or the DME loosing power completely because of the ignition switch or alarm unit etc.

Next time it happens tap or wiggle the ignition key to see if it makes a difference.

No, the engine speed drops

Feels like an intermittent fuel cut of

I bet it's the DME

I'm starting there

I had a similar stalling issue. Tach would drop. It was the electronic part of the ignition switch. My car would always restart immediately as the connections in the switch would be reset by turning the key off then on. I had another similar stall that turned out to be the large plug at the fire wall that connects to the ignition switch. Intermittently would short out and stall. Worth considering both these possibilities ..
