Verify a G50 is shortened?

A few months ago I purchased a G50 from a vendor in the US. I dont want to say who until they've had a chance to respond however you can probably figure it out from the pictures of the billet sidebrace. I did email them a week ago but it has not been possible to catch them by phone due to timezones...

I ordered and was invoiced for a shortened G50 specifically to fit my 1983SC. I got caught up plumbing in a new oil system, interior, fuel cell and other things so the transmission sat for a few months.

I went to install it last week and again today and it appears way too long. Here's what I observe;
1. The "nose " (shifter/forward end) hits the torsion tube well before it should. the shifter input shaft sits far back from the tunnel. pics of that attached.

2. The bellhousing protrudes farther into the engine bay than I recall any other 911 I've ever worked on.

3. The Hargett shifter rod is too short by about 2." The instructions call for trimming it so clearly something is off of its too short out of the box.

4. The hydraulic clutch line is about 2" too short to reach the clutch slave cylinder.

Sounds to me like I might have gotten a non-shortened unit? I dont have any others to compare and I sold of the 915 already so no way to compare without dropping the 915 out of the other car.

Anyone have a specific dimension or can otherwise tell from these semi-installed pics whether this is the proper unit or not?

I am using the transmission vendor's bespoke mount/cradle and wevo mounts.

All of the pics are of the transmission pushed as far forward in the car as possible so the "nose" in touching the torsion tube. You can see in the last one on my vernier caliper the bellhousing protrudes about 75mm into the engine bay.

Thanks for your help.

I have a short 930 trans and it looks like yours is the same.

Does your nose hit the torsion bar, do you have a longer hydraulic line, or different shifter?

That does look shortened to me. With my SC I found that I had to move the motor back .625" to make the G50 fit.

I've spoken to Jim at JPM, he's sure it is shortened and didnt think there should be contact there with my combination of car/year/model/transmission/cradle. However he did say the 930s had an additional entension coupler in the clutch hydraulic line. That could explain why the line is short though again, mine is not a 930, its a standard SC body.

He also said sometimes it was necessary to trim out a bit of the center of the torsion bar. I really dont want to do that for strength/integrity reasons. He said there was a stamped sheet metal section at the middle that's rosette welded but doesnt add any strength. He said that could be cut out without a problem...

Here are pics of my torsion tube where I've circled where the transmission nose is contacting the tube. I've also circled on the nose where it is hitting.

Any help? OK to trim the torsion tube?

That trans is shortened for sure. The length of the input shaft splining is much shorter than those on an unmolested 950 trans.

To use the Hargett shifter, don't you still need to use the factory G50 coupler that attaches to the G50 shift rod? It's the big part of part 16 in the attached picture

I would trim the torsion tube before messing with the end case on the trans. Those spots where it is contacting the chassis are places where the trans. houses bearings. So you don't want to thin those case locations.

I think you have no choice but to trim/shape the torsion bar tube. Can you dent it with a sharp blow from a body hammer. Air hammers are awesome for this kind of work......

Patrick is indeed correct about the clutch line length. The '89 930 with the G50.50 uses a union in the plumbing. It is part number 477.209.161

I'll be watching your thread closely, since i'll be involved in one of these in the near future. Will help as much as I can!

Here's what I found behind the sheet steel...a big honkin steel tube. It looks like I need to cut into that also to get enough clearance to move the transmission forward enough.

this thread has a lot of info...I'm not clear that's necessary in my case though. I want to stay with my torsion bars...

Fitting 6 speed G50 to '89 Carrera

That steel tube you see is splined on the inside for the end of the torsion bars. You can cut that out if you have coil overs, but if you still have torsion bars you need that.

On cars where we have cut that pice out. We dont cut completel through the torsion tube. We remove that inner piece. then weld in some reinforcing on the back (away) from the end of the tranasmission.

Hi,
I have all the pcs to move the torsion bars out like a 87 G50 911 if your going that route.

Thanks guys,

I ended up grinding off the edges, cleaning everything off and undercoating it to keep rust out. The transmission now sits right inside.

Carrera axles...hope they like 450hp...

I also purchased a complete clutch package from Patrick. It shipped with a new fork, the updated needle bearings, a new guide tube, TOB, pressure plate, clutch and lightened flywheel.

Its been a few months since I put a clutch together, is it normal for the TOB to have a loose fit around the guide tube? Here are both...

Thanks again everyone.
