Headlight Upgrade Pics
I rewired the headlight circuits on the SC this weekend so I can run with 80/100W H-4 bulbs. The relay kit was purchased from Daniel Stern and cost $45. The kit included two Bosch relays, relay sockets, heavy duty Hella H-4 sockets, two bayonet type fuse holders and terminals. I am waiting on some 4' length 3/8" black heat shrink tubing to finish the job. All the wiring downstream of the relays is 12ga. Here's a few pics.

This is exactly what I plan to do. Nice work.

I've done something similar. I connected 2 relays in each headlight bowl (one for low/one high beam) routed a fused 12vdc to each bowls 2 relays. Much better light same bulbs. When the bulb burn out I'll replace with 55/100.
I think 80/100 is too much for low beam. I just hate being blinded. I've about some with jap. cars installed these stronger light bulbs, they melted down.

I had the same thoughts too. Once everything is put back together, I am going to aim the headlights cafefully. Because the car is so low, I think I'll be ok. If I get a lot of people flashing me, I'll go with a lower wattage low beam.

John,
Do the H4 sockets have a part number?

I drive my car mostly at night. So far, i've only been flashed twice. That's maybe 6 months worth of occasional driving. I think if you aim them a bit low, you'll be fine.
Mine are 90W/100W by the way.

What's the consensus on the higher wattage bulbes doing damage to the lense or bucket? I've been interested in getting some more light, but I've also heard bad things about melting parts of the car.

Higher wattage bulbs can not be used on plastic headlight assemblies. The Bosch H-4 headlight reflectors and lenses are glass.

Whats the deal with the relay kit that Marcus Sucro sells here & on Rennlist? Is 1 relay required per lamp, or 1 for both?

John, Thanks for the advice. Now it looks like my bulb upgrade would have to involve trading in the H5s for H4s.

Two relays are required. One relay contols the low beam, the other does the high beams. The Bosch relay that I used have two #87 terminals.

You can make your own choice based on price alone, or do it the RIGHT way that John did! The Sucro kit uses generic relays that are less expensive than Bosch, and doesn't include the HD lamp sockets.
Two relays will carry higher Wattage lamps, but for maximum system relaibility with redundancy ... you need to install four relays. With a two relay setup, a single fault kills BOTH low beam filaments, or BOTH high beam filaments! Considering the large investment involved in the Bosch H4 headlamp assemblies ... I encourage anyone to invest a bit more time and money to do it the best, most reliable way possible!

I took Warren's and Ron's (RoninLB) advice and did four. Takes more time, but it's more reliable.
Here's a look at how I did mine: Uprated bulbs for H5 headlights

Glasgow 911SC,
I thought the bulb socket had a part number on the back but it only had the name HELLA and some german text. I took a couple of closeup pictures that may help. ![]() ![]()
