H4 trim ring question
My car has a front headlight out. My trims rings are both different, one has 2 screws in it, the other has no visible screws except a small hold on the bottom side of the light. It looks like there is a screw inside that hole but the ring is offset a little so I can't see what kind of fastener it actually is. Of course the one I need to replace is the one without screws. Does this trim ring pry off or does it need to be accessed from inside the fender somehow?
Thanks!

In the sugar scoops, you remove the bottom screw and it pries off from the bottom. The other two holes are for reaching the adjustment screws or something else. Not sure if that's same on H4.

Here you can see a trim ring with the two screws, one holds the trim ring and the other the complete assembly.

OK, so it looks like i'm missing an outer cover on the ring that has the 2 visible screws? All I have to do is pry off the one that doesn't have 2 visible screws and there is a second ring below it?

The very bottom center screw is the "retaining" screw. Remove it.
Lift from the bottom and it should slip off. Do not pry from the top or you will mess up the lip that holds the trim on. The head light assembly trim below is the same way, pull from the bottom. It may be on tight, just be gentle but firm. I like to use the hooked pin tool to help me get leverage to remove it by inserting it in the retainer hole and pulling outward. The two side screws are adjustment screws, do not touch those or you will need to re-align light. When putting them back on make sure bottom hole is lined up to the inner nut to keep alignment the same.

Warning, place towels around your paint, the assembly may pop out and scratch your paint. Hold the assembly as you pull off the assembly, it is heavier than you might think.

Dammit. I just bought a few painted "trim rings" that do not fit over the chrome ring on my H1s. They have three screw holes. What are these things, and how do I ensure I get the proper ones next time?

Those are H4 trim rings. You want these and paint to color

The trim ring posted by Draco will fit H1 and H4 headlight assemblies. The ring you got is the one that has the holes for the aiming screws, the H4s have three holes and the H1s have 5 holes. The part you need is 911-631-141-00 from our host. In this drawing you can see the red ring is the trim ring. In the catalog it is called trim ring cover. The OEM and the original are the same.

I just find myself wondering why anything but the top-most ring would be painted? Someone skimped out on buying the trim ring and painted the chrome bezel?

The H4 lights were available in two versions. One had a chrome plated outer ring. The other had what was essentially a black painted outer ring. There are those of us that paint the outer ring instead of adding the additional painted ring on top of it. Simpler, a few ounces less weight, etc.
Let me know if you want to sell one of the rings. I have a dented one I'm repairing, but replacing it would be easier... JR |
