Revised & Improved 9 Magazine Plus a Free Issue

Dear Porsche Fans:

I wanted to let everyone know the next issue of 9 Magazine should be at your local bookstore by the end of next week. Subscribers should also receive their copies around this same time.

We have hired on Marcus Huff as Editor-at-Large to help us fix grammar, spelling, and typo's at the magazine. This next issue we have also done a few face lifts to the editorial's giving it an updated look. Also, we have planned for several new departments for next year too.

Finally, we have a few extra hundred copies of the Winter 2002 issue we are giving away. Visit the web site and click on FREE SAMPLE ISSUE to get your copy today.

Again, look for the new 99% error-free issue with a red 2003 911 Turbo on the cover at your local bookstore, or right here at Pelican Parts Newsstand.

I've never seen the mag but this topic seems interesting:
"Defusing Police Lasers: Installing a K40 system which legally defuses Police lasers, the system is even hidden in the car!"

You must mean "typos", not "typo's". It's plural, not possessive.

Paul,

The laser system is mounted either as a new licence plate frame or inside your front air dam. The unit then has both front and rear radar detectors. All this is fed to a single LED light, and a speaker mounted on your dash.

Very professional install, and no worries. We had it installed on a 2002 911 Carrera, and it works!

Punctuation aside, I'd spend some time and effort on your webpage. The background has GOT to go, and the rest is a bit haphazard.

And I put my money where my mouth is:

original:

modified:

http://bender.annenberg.edu/cars/9mag/new.html

not perfect, no external style sheet, but what do you want for quick and nothin'?

What's with this continual spam from 9 Magazine?
Don't they get it....we don't want it!

Just take a look at the December/02 issue of Excellence.
Now *that* is a magazine worth pulping a damn tree for!

Geez...lets all take a comunal breath and let the animosity go.

Its getting a little tiring reading every infringement the guys at this mag. make.

If you don't like it, don't read it. I think the points have been made enough in the past.

Rather than posting here, post your concerns to them directly.

I agree with Doug though - I don't think we need companies pushing their wares on us here. Using the board in this way opens up every business to promote itself here and I'm sure thats not the point of this board. So with all respect Brian, get your product on the stands and let the market forces decide your survival. This board is not a promotional/advertising strategy for the use of anyone with a product to sell.

ahhhhhhhhhhhh..........breathing out

Cheers
Mark

sheesh...

using expathk's philosophy...who cares??!!

If you don't want people pushing wares on you don't click the link!!! And if it is PelicanParts illegal the moderators will delete it...

I have never read the mag, but it is an pelicanparts part or a sponsor...or something...the banners have been put on the webpage...

I "demand excellence" from all the products I buy...especially cars and reading material...that is why I haven't purchased it...

let the man do his thing...he is being a budding publisher/entrepreneur.

can't people just give him constructive critisism...I've never heard him lash out or not take the insults in stride...

sheesh...people just primed to exhibit their superior grammer skills or cut people down...not that this applies to anyone in particular...but just the feeling I get from reading the 9mag threads

well, not sure if I'm a target MJ, but I *was* trying to offer constructive criticism..and instead of just complaining, offering an actual example of things done (imho) better.

BUT, by posting here, he is opening himself up to whatever the community chooses to offer in response. You can't get the perk of free advertising without paying some sort of price...

Wouldn't be "diffusing" instead of "defusing" with respect to the police rader?

I like the mag. I am not ready to subscribe because I am only interested in 911 stuff. I guess it is my dream to publish my own car mag so I respect the guy alot. I write poorly so I dont even notice a typo or two. If I want perfect grammar I will read.... one of those books they made us read in highschool english : -))

Thumbs up

I want to thank 9 Magazine for putting a picture of my 2 girls in the last issue. We were on our way from Fort Bragg to Colorado on vacation and made a small detour to Tweeks Funfest. It was hot and humid, so that lead to some complaining by them. Plus they got bored kind of quickly. Inadition it was just me and them, my wife could not join us, traviling with 2 teen age girls can be challanging. We have been looking foreward to the issue to see if they were lucky enough to get in the magazine. So I would like to thank 9 Magazine for giving us a momento of our trip to Colorado.
Thanks

Actually, with respect to police radar, you'd have better luck with defusing it! (if you could).

ROFL

See, Now THIS is what has been lacking around here, ever since nostatic asked how's the weather in hell?

We'll see if this mag has anywhere near the same endurance.

I'm still laughing. . ."bu-bu-but, Iran it threw the spill checker to thymes, an it was Al spelt rite"

Had it with Excellence

I've let my subscription run out after 5 years. I'm tired of reading about $250,000 cars that I can't afford the wheels on. I want to see articles on 3.6 upgrades, brake upgrades, performanace upgrades, etc. The used car articles are word for word copys of previous years with valuation changes. (could just show the charts on a monthly basis and forget the rest). The only thing that's interesting or applicapable to my SC is Bruces columun. I find out more info and get my questions answered on this site.

Back to 9mag. Brian, it might have helped if you spent some time with another publication before starting out on your own. If you did put in some time elsewhere, well, what can I say, maybe this isn't your line of work.

Wow, tuff crowd.

Brian, You might want to consider maybe making your magazine more specialized. As it is you going straight up against Excellence and Porsche 911 World. Two top notch magazines that have had a lot more time to hone their skills. You'll be playing catchup for a long time.

What would make me want to buy an alternative to one of those magazines?

Glad you asked.

A magazine dedicated to early 911's would. It could have a regular section on restoration or preservation. It could have a section on mods like dropping in 3.2 or 3.6 in an early car. It could cover historic races. Feature articles on 911Rs , RSRs etc. As matter of fact, why not do a feature on Jack Olsens' car. He could even write it himself. (I heard it rumored that he has potential in that area).

I would love to read an interview with Gus at Pacific Fuel Injection. Maybe showing him go through the process of a rebuild of a MFI pump.

Or if you want to broaden the horizon then maybe go with vintage Porsches including 914's 356's etc.

You see where I'm going. You can't beat the big guys at their game so you should change the rules a little.

Don't let these guys get you down. It's easy to critisize. Much harder to do.

It's kind of like asking someone out of the blue if they want to help you bake a pie. They'll say, What? Why? But as soon as that smell starts coming out of the oven you'll be surprised at how many people will be there to "assist" you in taking it out of the oven.

Good Luck
Bobby

Bobboloo,
I agree. I think I mentioned that to Brian when we chatted briefly at the Ventura Autofest a couple of months ago. Not sure there's room in the market for another direct competitor to Excellence. A more specific viewpoint might differentiate the magazine. There are more than several mags out there competing for the ricer crowd which are essentially hot rodded cars, many with bad taste. There's an interest for such a publication for Porsche owners - hot rod/race/special Porsches, that is, not bad taste. Maybe a "Race Car Engineering" or "Race Tech" for Porsches. That's the direction I'd like Excellence (or somebody) to go.

Let's give the mag a little slack and see what happens. He's trying to contribute something to the community - a fairly small niche community in the automotive world. If people want to see a better magazine, why not write an article for it? Many from this board have contributed valuable tech articles for Pelican. Why not contribute to this new magazine as well? Maybe Brian has a budget for this. I don't know.

I think the addition of a dedicated editor is a good move on his part.

Just MHO,
Sherwood Lee
