Front Shock Tower Mount Rupture Help
After a very mildly spirited drive, the front passenger strut started squeaking. So I pull back the carpet to find this:
![]() The squeaks are much much worse after a few miles heading back home. Incessant, constant, loud squeaking ![]() What is the best way to repair this? Are there reinforcement plates that can be bolted or welded in? It's hard for me to tell because of the black goop but is this a very serious rupture? |

rupture? are you talking about the crack in the black goo?
looks normal from here. for the squeak, might be the torsion bar rubbing the inside of the control arm- also check the sway bar bushings

^^^ That shock tower looks normal.
You have some worn bushings somewhere else in the suspension..probably the anti-sway bar as jason suggest.

Could be bushings as mentioned or a failed strut. Take it to an alignment/suspension shop for a diagnosis.

Going to suggest that that car has probably never had an alignment and by now, your rubber bushings are probably shot. The important ones are the control arm bushings and the spring plate bushings.
I'd suggest taking it to a 911-knowledgeable shop and having all that stuff refreshed. Maybe new shocks/strut inserts, too. JR |

To satisfy your curiosity peel back the goo a bit so you can see the solid underbody....
Remove the tire and jack it up...support it properly and move things around a bit to find you squeak....if it is that prevalent shouldn't take much.

Koizumi,
Bounce on the front bumper to see if you can duplicate the noise. When I developed a squeak, it was my torsion bar bushings or lack there of so it was metal to metal rubbing. Swapped to new and squeak went away. WIWIT, I also upted to the thicker 87-89 Sway bar and bushing set. Also new ball joints.

that appears to be missing the part that stabilizes the bushing and is used to lock in camber settings during an alignment. see the two threaded bolt holes just beyond the strut tower in your photo. that's where the back side of the plate would mount with another single treaded anchor spot in front of the tower.

It looks like someone may have repaired the shock mount and covered their work with goop.
The adjustment clamps should be visible and not have the goop. Just the shock tower itself. You need to clean all that off too se what is there.

I'll have a goop scrape session and take off the wheel on put her up on stands.
When I push down on the fender, she groans and squeaks bad. If I drive by you, you'll hear loud intermittent short squeaking. The car is not happy at all |
