BMW Roundel BMW '02 Burning Water

my brother-in-laws BMW '02.....
Overheated once or twice last summer.
Installed new water pump and thermostat. One of the water pump mounting bolts was stripped so I drilled and tapped for a 7mm bolt. (was 6mm) This went well.

Soon after, car was blowing steam out of the tail pipe. All indications pointed toward a head gasket. The guy spent the next two months refurbishing the head. (the head gasket was blown on #1 cyl) Had the head milled and checked for cracks.

He put it all back together himself. (never did this kind of thing before but he did a good job)

20-30 seconds after starting, steam again out of the pipe. We let it run for about 12 minutes at 2000 RPM to break in the new cam and thinking maybe steam was from some residual water from initial problem. It never cleaned up. Also, thermostat di not seem to open.

We took the water pump belt off and ran it for a minute or two. Steam was greatly reduced.

I can't get the drill and tap thing out of my mind, but surley, from 6 to 7mm would not have broke through.

Also, originally, water was also in oil. New oil looks kind of milky also.

Sounds like cracked block to me.....Any '02 guys that might have some insite?

I think you've posted to the wrong board - this board is for Porsche 911 owners.

I've heard of some cars being cooled by "water" or "anti-freeze." Seems silly of course. Why use an additional liquid when you can use air?

water?... isn't it that stuff you inject into your engine if you're running a turbo and intercooler?... wait wait I got it!... IT CLEANS YOUR WINDSHIELD!!!!

seriously.. check the block and heads for cracks (magnaflux?) and warpage. My truck's warped head was doin' the same thing with the oil.

'Tis true, there is a whole 2002 Board over here:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/early-bmw-cars-2002-bavaria-etc/?daysprune=

I don't know the answer - sorry, but I can commiserate on the amount of work done for nil gain.

As for the oil-cooled comments - I have two water cooled cars and they both leak freakin' coolant (actually the 02 stopped after I tightened a hose clamp).

Of course the '02 runs at a steady 71 deg C (on a 71 deg thermostat) following a radiator upgrade of US$150. Never seen over 80 deg even on the track ---> water has a place sometimes!

To all the that were offended:
Sorry, I'm new to this posting, thread, bulletin board stuff!!!

The funny thing is,....I got more sarcastic responses about the BMW than I have ever gotten with technical questions on my SC or 930....

Hey guys, lighten up. It's good to be reminded that some folks think is is ok to put water in their engines. I personally like the green color so I know where they are hiding.

I heard the latest porsche 911 has water as coolant. Or, am I wrong? What's good enough for Porsche engineers, must be good enough for me.

Lighten up for god's sake. It is not like the Air-cooled 911's were free from little quirks.

Everyone loves a cheap shot!

To be honest, traffic is so slow over on the 2002 Board I would almost be tempted to post here if it was urgent - there is a whole lot of general automotive knowledge on theis BBS.

Germaneighter,

If it's an 02, why the hell is your brother-in-law working on it himself????

There have been a few instances of "Lemon" engines for the later Bimmers, go to the local dealer and get it checked out. I have heard of others that get full engine replacements, and all work done to that point covered.

Please post in BMW forums.

I thought the same thing at first then I realized they were talking about a BMW 2002 (the model #).
