Euro H4 headlights

Hello,

I am looking to start the modifications on my newly acquired 1986 targa; one of the items that I am looking to replace are the stock headlights.

Our host no longer carries the H4 headlight assemblies, and I am looking for other suppliers of the product. Does anyone have any guidance where I could find a set?

I found these through Vertex Auto:

Porsche H-4 H4 Ultimate Headlight Package: Body Electrical &amp Lights Lenses

They claim they are Porsche products, but are no longer made by Bosch.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Greg

They look better imo, but remember the light sockets have to be replaced and a bit of retiring so that the city lights feature of the euro lights turn on with the parking lights. Also add the paint to the unpainted trim rings to complete the look.

They do some up on the classifieds from time to time, and I've found them on eBay as well. Bosch now has them made elsewhere, but they seem to be just fine.

I agree with you that the H4s look 'proper' on a 911, but they're not cheap.

I can't believe how much these have went up in price. It was only 2-3 years ago when a NIB set of Bosch (made in the Czech) could be bought for $400 on Ebay. I'm glad I ugraded when I did!

Thanks for all the suggestions, definitely will save a few dollars with the advice.

Its crazy how much everything has gone up since the last time I purchased these parts. Looking to get a cat bypass and SW chip, everything is nearly 50% more since I bought in 2007.

Better get all the mods done now before the prices go up again!

I applied protective transparent vinyl film to my new, expensive H4's, as I was noticing some pitting after a few thousand miles. Available thru our host. Seems to not affect light output or pattern noticeably; definitely worthwhile to protect 'investment'.

Nobody is parting out wrecks anymore. The price of parts is going up in tandem with the value of these cars. I'm waiting for someone to come out with a good-looking LED setup.

I first read about these Cyclops LED H4's in this forum.

3800 Lumen H4 LED Headlight bulb

Any one have a recent, longer term review of how they perform?

I have a set of new, Bosch H4 housings ready to swap over from my stock H5's but haven't decided whether to go with an HID or LED setup.

I mean a properly-projected LED light (such as Hella's), not an LED bulb in an H4 enclosure. The latter simply does not put light in the right place.

I still have yet to see a bulb, "shield" or not, that doesn't glare when stuffed in an enclosure it wasn't designed for. If I just wanted everything to be brighter, I'd put in high-power bulbs. The trick is to get the lows to put the light where it is effective in helping you see down the road.

Two points of clarification for the OP:

1) If you're not overly concerned with the aesthetics of the sugar scoop headlight assemblies and are looking for better light, our host (and others) sells drop in H4 replacements for the sealed beam headlights that our 86 carreras (and earlier 911s) came with -- these provide light distribution and illumination that is similar to that provided by the 911-specifc h4s at a small fraction of the price.

2) The 911-specific h4 assemblies require additional parts to complete. At a minimum, you'll need to separately buy the retaining screw that fits into the bottom of the chrome trim ring to hold the assembly onto the car. If you want the painted rings shown in george's post above (post #7), you'll need to buy both the rings (which will need to be painted) and a pair of special mounting screws to hold on the rings. Finally, it's best to replace the seals between the headlight buckets and the assemblies when doing the retrofit, so pick up a pair of these too

I'd venture to say that aesthetics is the primary reason people switch out their sugar scoops.

Agreed, and that's why I'll be swapping out my h4-equipped sugar scoops in conjunction with a rust repair/repaint, but I was SHOCKED by how much better the drop-in H4s illuminate the road . . . .
